It's been 3 years almost to the day so it's been a good run. Funds just came through from selling one of my properties today so could dump some more cash into going fully off grid.

Add another two pylontech UP5000 batteries taking it to 34kWh in batteries and adding a dual fuel 5kw generator for topping up the batteries on cloudy days if SOC drops to under 20% and charge it to 30%.

That would be about another R75k

My daily usage is 45kWh but it's two households and includes my tenant in the cottage.

I also have two pumps for my water as I'm already off grid with water.

I could put my tenants on the non essential side of the inverter which should see me being totally off grid but it's a douche move of I have power and my tenants do not.

I installed a private prepaid meter in the cottage so technically I'm selling my solar generated electricity to them which is about R1 000 income every month.

I'm busy trying to save as much as I can and hoping I will have enough towards the end of the year.

Realistically why would they need to offer specials? There's super-high demand for these things. Maybe by November it'll cool off a bit, but my crystal ball is as good as yours in that regard.

3 months back I would agree with you, but I'm seeing very low prices on some panels and batteries. (I haven't looked at inverters)
My Shoto bought around October last year has dropped R3k in price.
My Jinko panels also bought around October last year have come down R300 per panel.

I think everyone overbought, and perhaps the current improvement in exchange rate is helping.
But I do agree that I dont think black friday will have massive discounts.
 
I've been getting random earth leakage trips at least once a week since my inverter was installed (never happened before this). It doesn't happen when grid is restored after loadshedding but instead randomly during the day. I don't see any spikes or dips in the grid voltage and frequency either.

I've removed all the surge protector plugs because I read on Powerforum those can sometimes cause the EL to trip but that didn't help.

Also read it can happen if the inverter pushes back to grid due to spiky workloads but sometimes the trips happen when there's no real load (<500w idle draw). I also tried increasing grid trickle feed to 30W but it didn't make a difference.

When the EL trips, the inverter reports grid as disconnected so I'm wondering if the inverter was wired incorrectly or if this is normal. Should the inverter be on the EL line or fed directly from mains?
Sigh, replaced the ELCB yesterday and everything was going well, now it trips again after power comes back from loadshedding.

Panels have their own earth and inverter is now being fed directly from mains. Mains - > inverter - > ELCB.

Do you have your earth and neutral bonded?
 
Yes, they installed a earth neutral bridge point by the inverter. I have no idea how that works so don't know what to check if it was done right.
Slightly different but similar

I use a contactor to activate my earth neutral bond during loadshedding and so it make quite a loud cluck sound when it connects
 
When it's loadshedding and night time, and a load is running off only the battery, will the deye/ss inverter trip when the load exceeds the discharge amps setting or the bms max discharge amps?
Feel like the discharge amps setting (or the lower of the 2 rather), but not willing to test this one. :)
 
As per manual (attached), this is a 0.5C battery. Max charge /discharge is 100A, and it does not specify for how long, but it is typically only a couple of seconds. Discharge/charge 50A continuous, so for 2 in parallel, I would keep it at 100A (the nominal setting), especially for longevity.

But then nominal 50A in the manual, lols.
 
Something weird happend this morning and I am not sure why:

Battery was at 50% SOC as per settings. Until the geyser kicked in and drained the battery even though we had grid power.

I think it may be because I have priority load ticked instead of priority battery. Can anyone please confirm?

Priority load / priority battery is simply where the PV gets directed to. Inverter will first use battery up to the set SoC and only grid thereafter. I'm assuming your battery was above SoC for that time slot.

I was on 51% and SOC was set to 50%. I would've expected it that when it hit 50%, it would switch to grid but it didn't. Normally it does this no problem.

Yes, it should switch to grid in that situation.

Not that quickly. Something definitely odd there, no way it should drain the battery UNLESS your battery has the old SOC drift I moan about and it wasn't really at 50%. Can you see your battery voltage at the time? When outputting high , the voltage is at a lower state but it also recover a bit to the correct level once that drops.

ie: If I run at about 1KVA and my voltage is 49V and it drops about 0.03V per minute of consumption at 1KVA, then I would expect in five minutes my voltage to be 48.75V but if I have a high output at say 4KVA not only will I suffer the drop in voltage from the actual energy discharged but there is a temporary higher loss. So it runs for 2 mins at the high rating, the voltage reading will actually reflect 48.5V while outputting high or slightly lower but will return to the similar voltage it would be at 1KVA when the draw lessens, minus the energy expected discharge loss of voltage ( 48.75V ).
