AMA, Having Telkom FTTH Installed Today

I'm going to give this another go. Thanks peeps.

See the WA site...clear as day there.

Kinda weird how the upload is 4x slower. What are they charging for this and do you have a cap on it?
Haha.

1:1 accounts are expensive as hell.

My upload is supposed to be 4mb which is in line with nornal 10:1 download v upload ratio.

Costs R738 a month for 40mb line.

I'm using various data accounts since this is on Telkom's fibre ring. Using only capped data packages at present.

Ah cool. You're going to love it, trust me! :D

My upload/download is a bit slow today. Supposed to be 75/75.

I'm paying roughly the same but uncapped and includes a cable dstv equivalent with 60 channels or so. Really hope it goes the same way DSL did by getting everyone freed from dialup.

O_O Daaaaaaaaamn son.

That is awesome!

Yea I was pretty happy with 4mb for my needs, but there was a congested internal ATM node that made the net unusable at night. Lucky enough to be in a fibre area and the extra cost - after deducting the ADSL and voice rental - is only R200 more for x10 the speed.

I am indeed loving it :D

Haha thanks! Yeah look I felt the same when I went from 56k dialup to 384k dsl...and again when I upgraded to 4Mb dsl. If you consider that 50% of all data in the world was created in the last 2 years then it kinda makes sense to move forward like that.

I must say I never bothered much with upload speeds, but I'm big into creating gopro footage from my dives etc and I only ever uploaded 4min videos, but I'm now starting to just use youtube/vimeo as my online backup for all my footage. I used to also record sparingly because I'm not really using everything, but I'm hitting Egypt in a week and going to record everything I see and just upload and sort it all later.

Sweet.

Content creation can properly kick off now with these levels of upload!

Pity it's in Norway...

I'm surprised at the speeds myself, despite "being Norway", I'm REAAAALLY far north. Takes forever to get anything here and they still offer all the speeds.

The entire country is rolling out 4G now and want countrywide coverage in 2yrs time. I'm actually doing generator upgrades on all the main transmitter stations for cell/TV/FM/DAB radio towers all over the country so getting to see quite a bit.

Only problem with staying on the stations is having to use a long drop and you cant drink the water because it has legionella growing in the supply tanks...but in winter you just scoop some fresh snow from outside and you're set.

While Vox advertise it, upon calling in they told me that the prices were for illustration and they require you to bundle both line and data.

Try another consultant. I've successfully ordered line only from VOX. Installation recently completed. My experience is that I called twice, got forwarded to two different consultants. One told me no, the other sent me a contract and got the ball rolling.

The net result is that I had no services with VOX and had no reason to move other services over to them... I am now considering dropping Afrihost for VOX as the sales guy I spoke to has been super jacked up and our Afrihost line a joke. Sales person A from VOX would have cost them business if I had left it at that... Sales person B now has a client for VOX that is looking to spend more.

The ISP's really should consider offering Naked Fibre as a sales tactic to get customers from other ISP's looking at VOX. It seems to be working for me.
