The Telkom guys are here busy installing my fibre to the home in Camps Bay. If there are any tests you'd like me to run or questions you'd like me to ask them, let me know. I should be up and running within a few hours.

The details: 20mbps, 50GB Telkom Softcap (Half price special)

I will be updating this page with all the details as and when I get them: http://goo.gl/Tkiqnn

You can't see anything going to the street. It is all buried. I'll ask the Telkom guys where the fibre goes and see what I can do.

I have updated http://goo.gl/Tkiqnn with some more pictures.

What you using to take the pictures? :p Pretty good quality.

Do you have a sea view?

Please post speedtest.net results once done?

I am using an iPhone 6. I normally have a sea view but it is misty today so can't even see the neighbours.

I will definitely post speedtest.net results. Will try a few different ISPs if I can.

What is their policy on getting the fibre to your property - do they repair whatever they dig up fully? (Have forgotten the term for this policy in FTTH)...

What was the waiting time for installation?

How long did it take?

Finally, speedtest!!!

The installation timeline was only a week or two, ordered directly from Telkom. They had me run conduit so they didn't dig up anything. The longest delay was 2 weeks waiting for body corporate permission for conduit. I doubt they would dig up anything. I guess you would have to have that done first.

They have gone off to the exchange now to connect up the other end. They have been busy since 9am. So that makes it 4.5 hours so far.

Good stuff... looking forward to speedtests.

I have updated http://goo.gl/Tkiqnn with some more photos of the final fibre/router setup. Unfortunately there is a delay in the activation so no speed tests yet!

5 Hours of installation and now we wait for the guy at the exchange to finish his lunch and activate my line!

For those who don't want to click through, here is the back of the fibre modem and router:

Years and years of waiting, but I imagine the last 5 hours are by far the most frustrating. :)

I can't seem to find the product to order online?

Did you just call 10210?

I complained about my ADSL speeds and someone called me to ask if I would rather have fibre. I then applied in the Telkom Direct Store in Sea Point. You can email [email protected] or check out http://interactive.iliveit.co.za/Fibre_OnBoarding/ID61870_FibreData_20Mbps_50Gb.php for more info.

If you want to see if you have coverage check http://www.telkom.co.za/coverage/ just make sure to change the filter to fibre.

Weird. You seem to have a Alcatel-Lucent CPE while Telkom gave me a Huawei device.

On the Huawei the LAN ports are all locked down except 1.

I'm hoping these aren't locked down. Maybe I can get two routers to connect through and share with my neighbours. Will definitely bump it up to 100mbps then.

It could be due the equipment back at the exchange.

If linked to a MSAN then it's Huawei.

If linked to a ISAM then it's Alcatel-Lucent.

In theory, it does the same thing so it should not matter!
