AMA, Having Telkom FTTH Installed Today

Please show me any adsl line that can upload at 2meg

Think he is talking about a general dsl which would including vdsl.
20mb vdsl line is meant to have 2mb upload (same as the 20mb fibre)
40mb vdsl line is meant to have 3mb upload (AFAIK 40mb Telkom fibre will have 4mb upload)

I'll rather keep my 40Mbps VDSL thanks. Telkom Fibre is very underwhelming in the upload department.

Same price with the line rental as this 20Mbit fibre but has double the download speed and 1Mbps more upload capacity.

Even VDSL, I don't think I have seen any lines that actually get near 2meg upload

What?

About a R200 increase could get you 100mb line, with about 8-10mb upload. I think telkom needs to reconsider it's 20mb and 40mb deal, and have it at 20/5-10 and 40/10-15 respectively. It will undoubtedly become a more popular choice over dsl connection. Then again, fiber atm is still very young and hasn't really matured yet. Which I will doubt it will soon, unless undersea cable providers increase the bandwidth to at least Europe.

Yep, I agree they need to re-evaluate those options. They should at least make them 2:1 download:upload. If they don't make it the default then at least give the consumer the choice to pay more if that's the only option.

If everything works well, I'll happily pay the R210 extra pm to make it 100 down, 10 up. I just went for the 20mbps to try it out and see how everything works.

Well the upload part is the most consistent generally. So even 20Mbps VDSL users shouldn't have an issue with their upload speeds.

I think the reason I would go fiber is to avoid the congestion and distance issues you have with ADSL/VDSL

If you are not within 100m of the exchange its better to go fiber.

Also... I'd like to get away from telkom, so would opt for one of the other offerings

I got that price from webafrica btw. But it should be about the same increase, for the about the same amount of data.

Telkom seems to be deploying FTTH only where VDSL isn't available. As any sensible person would go for the VDSL option over FTTH with the current products. In my area the only option is FTTH or a max 5-6Mb ADSL line.

Can confirm. The Constantia VDSL rollout was halted for Telkom FTTH. Now they won't be coming because of Link Africa/Frogfoot.
