AMA, Having Telkom FTTH Installed Today

I think the reason I would go fiber is to avoid the congestion and distance issues you have with ADSL/VDSL

If you are not within 100m of the exchange its better to go fiber.

Also... I'd like to get away from telkom, so would opt for one of the other offerings

I really disagree with your 100m figure, I'm on 40mb VDSL at 780m from exchange. Download constant at 4.6-5mb/sec and upload constant 340 - 400kb/sec. No line drops, ping time outs etc

So I have one question. How was the installation into your house? Did you have an existing conduit they used or did they do all the work to get it cabled in?

The installation timeline was only a week or two, ordered directly from Telkom. They had me run conduit so they didn't dig up anything. The longest delay was 2 weeks waiting for body corporate permission for conduit. I doubt they would dig up anything. I guess you would have to have that done first.

They have gone off to the exchange now to connect up the other end. They have been busy since 9am. So that makes it 4.5 hours so far.

I had to put conduit in. I needed body corporate permission for this too. In Telkom's terms and conditions it says that you have to do this at your own cost.

Hmm, doing mine with WA and I asked them and they told me nothing of it :/ Guess I wait and see on Monday when they arrive. I'll then throw a fit about not being told...

Is it really worth just throwing a fit? They will just leave and only book another installation once you have it in! Good luck though.

Perhaps. I have spoken to two different people at Telkom who both told me I require nothing pre done and they will provide and do everything when they come. This is why I was asking as Telkom has told me on now two separate occasions as well as WA saying nothing is needed my side. So if they do come and say they wont do it then I will throw a fit and then hassle them daily once I've installed conduit.

The Telkom guys are here busy installing my fibre to the home in Camps Bay. If there are any tests you'd like me to run or questions you'd like me to ask them, let me know. I should be up and running within a few hours.

The details: 20mbps, 50GB Telkom Softcap (Half price special)

I will be updating this page with all the details as and when I get them: http://wp.me/p684ZJ-1L

Well Telkom is busy doing my installation as we speak. No need for conduit or anything. They've laid it through the roof and down a hole I use for ethernet now. Will glue it to my wall at the correct angles and then be done. The guys that are here say they try to make a plan, but conduit just makes the process faster or smoother. I am also only 5m away from the actual fibre pole as its on my property. Maybe thats what makes the difference. So far only 30m of fibre cable used in total.

Yup all done. On the 100mb WA package. Just waiting for all the final details sorted out WA side then can use it. They also sorting out the cancellation of my ADSL line
