AMA, Having Telkom FTTH Installed Today

Sweet! Looking forward to the results...

On the topic of modems does ftth require a specific router or can one use an existing adsl router?

You need an ethernet WAN router. So anything that can authenticate PPPOE over an ethernet port is okay.

Well no delivery of my new modem today...they charge you and can't even get the shipping done as next day...really disappointed in WA on this one. Esp since they refused to send it before Telkom did the install. Now its 2 days that I haven't been able to use my fibre cause my current ADSL modem doesn't have the WAN port :( Should have ordered a cheap one from TA. Would have arrived within 4 hours at the rate they ship things.

Get a Mikrotik...

Just remember, you doing PPPOE & NAT on the router maybe some QOS as well, these are CPU intensive if you moving high bandwidths...so make sure you get something with some horsepower :-)

Ideally you want a router that can perform NAT in hardware

In my tests, the ubiquity edgemax outperformed the mikrotiks in the same price range.

So the PPPOE thing worked like a charm, thanks for the suggestion guys! I did manage to pull my whole 55GB download queue last night between 12-6am. Though pretty sure it would eat through more if I had more stuff to download.

I tested some torrenting, I actually did download the new Ubuntu using torrent and HTTP. Maxed out at 1MB/s for torrent and 4.2MB/s for HTTP.
But that could just be the time of day (9PM). I'm sure it opens up more during the wee hours of the morning.

Pretty good! Strange that one would shed 50% of line speed to overseas servers?

So are you using your stock router then or did they deliver the new one?

Guys I don't understand this, if you use a standard router to dial a PPPOE connection, does that mean it's possible to use a standard DSL account from lets say Afrihost or Vox to connect to the internet?

Telkom FTTH ties into IPConnect this means you can use all the existing xDSL ISPs . Tested it with a FNBConnect/CrystalWeb/WebAfrica account and it works.

Not all fibre providers will be able to do it.

If it's Telkom FTTH most likely yes. Uses IPConnect.

Those tests were done connecting my PC directly to the ONT and dialing PPPOE from it. Now with the Huawei router I still get the same. Though I suspect it will fluctuate daily as do current things. It is sad to see you lose about half your speed when going overseas but it isn't a 1:1 ratio fibre line so that is expected. Same with our work fibre that costs 5x as much. We lose quite a chunk of the speed going international.

Yeah, I tried with my other accounts to see and they work. The telkom fibre just connects right to their ADSL systems so data from any ISP will work. Though some ISP's limit the speed of the data. I recall Afrihost having theirs capped at 40mb until recently where it now works up to 100mb. Just don't use an uncapped account, those would be speed limited and probably get you in *** :P

I am a lot less bitter about having a 24 month contract knowing that the price decreases are passed along even mid contract.
This is good to know. Thank you :)

Hmmm - I wonder of that reduction will include reduction in line rental prices as stand alone.

Thank you for the write up! Was very informative :)

Also enjoying the fibre experience :D

FYI the senior Western Cape Telkom FTTH guys tell me they are rolling out the the rest of Camps Bay in the coming months, sounds like whole suburb will be covered by year end or before
