Amazon.co.za is live

These days you definitely can build a 7 component PC in under 30 minutes. The time consuming areas are Windows installation and packaging it up for transportation.....and troubleshooting components if there's issues, so an averaged 1 hour allocation should be sufficient. A 2 day max delivery time is do-able.

Yeah, it was a lot harder back in the day.

- 1000 screws that needed to be removed, managed and then used to install things
- The boxes had no cable management
- Motherboards wanted you to plug in pin after pin
- CPU's were much more difficult to install
- Hard drive brackets had to be removed to install drives in them
- Then after the hardware you needed to spend ages messing around in the BIOS, then try to install Windows and 4-6 custom drivers etc.

Still no delivery for me. Their time is running out to actually deliver by today. DPD tracking estimates delivery by the 15th. Which is not today like Amazon says.

No problems here ordering from .com
There were in the old days when SAPO still existed
Now slow is Aramex, fast is UPS. Both have been perfect here.

VAT and Import duties are calculated and paid at checkout through Amazon now, so nothing to pay afterwards

Only issue is the cost of shipping, import duties and the weak Rand

Same goes for Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.de, Amazon.ca and Amazon.fr
Still waiting to try Amazon.co.jp

Amazon Japan use DHL. For items which don't ship one can use Buyee or similar services. Of course with these services you can also buy stuff from sites like BIC Camera etc.

Some services have coupon promotions which means you can buy an item cheaper than direct if going through such a service. I suppose they claim tax back for themselves as prices would be tax inclusive.

Got my books (that were meant to be delivered on Thursday) today.

The one hardcover has scuffs/tears on all four corners. Pity since it cost R1500.

Decided it's not worth the environmental impact to ship back and replace so leaving as is.

Yeah, as expected Amazon didn't come through. Delivery is delayed to 16 May for some reason.

I think the courier they use, DPD, only services our area on selected days. I think it's Thursdays which lines up with the 16 May date. I think Courier Guys also only do 2 days a week. Having crappy courier partners is going to ruin Amazon for outlaying areas.

It doesn't look good for my 2nd order either. Amazon hasn't shipped it yet and it also said delivery by Wednesday. Order made on the same day from Takealot has shipped and will be delivered by Wednesday. At least one thing can be said for Takealot. They stick to delivery dates. Have never been disappointed by them.

Update: Amazon order now also shows as shipped. This one is coming via Courier Guys. So now they are on par. Now to see if parcels actually arrive by Wednesday.

Amazon 1 / Takealot 1.

First AirFryers, then Oneblades, now we’re all buying hair clippers. I saw they have Philips Sonicare toothbrushes on sale as well. I wonder if @backstreetboy noticed.
If you buying those philips toothbrushes, check the price of a replacement brush first, not cheap

First Amazon order got delivered today. It's a day later than Amazon said it would be and that's after their was a delay with an item. DPD Laser seems to be the bottleneck since they use a 3rd party courier who only picked the parcel on Monday and only delivered it today.

Did anyone else receive a parcel where the packaging tape has come undone? Mine was undone in the middle of the box. Thankfully nothing was missing.

I have another order coming via Courier Guys. Will see if that one goes better.

But they will also have to pay shipping, storage and taxes on those things. And don't forget SA labour laws.
For the amount of stock they need to bring in, shipping will be incredibly cheap. Shipping by ship might be slow but it is cheap. They also have their own warehouses so no need to pay for storage, but if they stick to the basic conditions of employment, then the labor laws should pose no threat. On the other hand I bet that there are already unions forming in the minds of morons, and I think that Amazon can expect their first strike not long after going live.

Yes if you just ship random stuff in bulk. someone has to pay for that and that is cash and interest till it gets sold one day.. Someone also had to pay for those warehouses, again capital and interest and staff.
