Amazon FireTV

Hmm that's a bummer that you cant get Dolby from Netflix via the roku, but is it entirely just because roku doesnt have optical digi out so you can't connect it directly to an AV receiver?

Well I don't have an AV receiver to start with and the home theather system does not support DD+ via HDMI. Problem lies in the fact that the Roku does just forward the signal and requires a device that can support DD+ on the receiving end. So the Fire will be the solution as it supports full DD+, my WD did that too.

i bought mine already, had it delivered to a friends address in NY. He will drop it off for me later today, when he arrives back from the states

Saw their ad on Hulu:

Heh. 'Hello, pants.'

Yes, I also saw the ad on Hulu Plus. This could be the device that brings streaming to the masses! I wouldn't be surprised if Amazon's instant streaming service overtakes Netflix in the next year or two.

No international shipping available though so would need to jump through another hoop to get it to SA and therefore drive up the price :-(

@Yotch Yep, I blew my Roku. Great memory you've got!

I have a Roku for the bedroom and in the lounge I use a combination of smart tv, ps3 and htpc for Netflix, Hulu, Plex, XBMC and Sky Go.

The wife is enjoying xbmc hence the fire tv to possibly replace the Roku.

YOU can use postbox courier buying from the amazon uk store, they cheaper then the us store

Decisions decisions decisions, roku3 or FireTv

Anyone watched the Hulu amazon Fire tv ad with Gary Busey?
It cracks me up everytime with his crooked eyes and mad mouth, talking to the lamp and his pants, "hello lamp, hello pants".

I see it available on ebay with worldwide shipping.
I am keen to try it out but would like a local review first

Yoh, that's a bit pricey.

When I ordered my Roku 3 (which was also $99 at the time) it landed here at R1,300 all inclusive direct from Amazon. I think I'll wait for Amazon :D

That must be Gary Busey's website?
Why you ask?
Because he's bat **** cray cray asking that price ;)

I don't think Amazon will be opening the Fire tv up for international shipping as they will probably only be offering it to countries who are eligible for the Prime service. The point of the device and possibly why I think it's subsidised, would be to drive up subscriptions and in turn revenue for its online TV offering.

The price of R1899 is probably fair based on where the Rand is right now and to accommodate the forwarding charges to overcome the international shipping limitations. The guy is probably making R200-R300 profit for his efforts.
