Amazon FireTV

Just received my Fire TV, just using it in standard mode.

Very impressed, video quality is great, not sure whether that is because the video circuitry is great, or because of the pretty good wifi performance.

This has certain advantages over the Roku 3, but also lacks a few (remote headphones, additional channels).

I should maybe sell one of my Roku's and keep the other.

This may be good for travel, small and light, and with the DNS setting easy to use with UnoTelly on a mobile router. This is not as simple with a Roku 3, as you will have to set UnoTelly up on the mobile router.

I must say since installing XBMC and addons, I do not miss the Roku. It has evrything I need and more.
The only thing I( hope for is an update on the Netflix app.

But must say haven't looked back since sI got it up and running...

Congrats. I'm jealous now :D

Do you use Plex by any chance?

I started with plex, but it struggles with DTS sound. That was one of the reasons I switched to XBMC to get the 5.1. Since then I do not use plex anymore.

Yes, I see on the Plex forums people complaining about lack of 5.1 on the Fire TV. It's not a Plex issue though apparently and a fix needs to happen on Amazon's side.

I'll keep my Roku 3, it just plays everything flawlessly.

Haven't tried Plex or XBMC, have had no need as yet.

But will start playing around soon.

I was always a strong beliver in PLex as it was easy to configure and did what I wanted to. But the possiblity to stream HD and all movies and series without having to download them won me over. So ever since I started with the fire tv I have not used any downloads anymore.

Being on Afrihost uncapped, it streams full speed even though p2p is shaped.

You in Table View still? What line speed you have and what Afrihost package? I cancelled my AH account this month, speeds gone to the dogs.

Yes I am still in Table View round about mid blouberg rd. I am on the 10 Mbit home uncapped. I get full speeds as I am close to the exchange. The download speeds are quite bad up until midnight, but as I said I am only using realtime services now and it works well for me.

I have been using my FireTV with Unotelly set up on the router, works well. Then I can update the IP on any device on the network.

But if I take Unotelly off the router, and set it up on the FireTV, how do I update the IP ?

Any ideas, there is nothing about this on the Unotelly website ?

Have you tried to load the Unotelly app from the Play Store. You need to tap somewhere at the bottom of the screen to update the IP. I have used this app on the DroidTV MX. Otherwise I have also been able to login to the Unotelly website using the Dolphin browser. I can also update the IP this way. You may need to have Flash installed on the browser to get the page to load.

Here is a guide ...

That will only work if you have Unotelly on the router ?

Don't you need an app on the FireTV - but I have not found any.

I'm suggesting loading either the Unotelly app directly onto the FireTV or the Dolphin browser or equivalent.

Yes you should be able to. You should be able to install it in the same way as any other android app on the FireTV. On the DroidTV you can just install any app from the standard browser. Have you unlocked the USB port?

Does this help?

I will have a look, I tried last night and couldn't find the Unotelly app for installation on the FireTV.

Maybe I should ask Unotelly.

@Jola: You can download the app to your PC from the link given in Method 2 of the Unotelly guide I posted above. Then you should be able to install it using that video or a FTV app installation guide. Let me know if you are still struggling and I'll look more carefully.
