Amazon Kindle for SA

Would love to have an electronic book reader that will let me import ANY book I want to read and download new ones off the internet.

Oh, wait I already do. My Nokia E71 or my iPAQ with the Mobireader software. :D

Not gonna waste my time on this other FAILware.

ASUS

if you are not in a hurry .. wait 3-5 month . ASUS is coming with something much better.
... assume that the following details are sourced from Asus, then: "Unlike current ebook readers, which take the form of a single flat screen, the Asus device has a hinged spine, like a printed book," the Times of London reports. "This, in theory, enables its owner to read an ebook much like a normal book, using the touchscreen to "turn" the pages from one screen to the next. It also gives the user the option of seeing the text on one screen while browsing a web page on the other. One of the screens could also act as a virtual keypad for the device to be used like a laptop."

...

hmmm. sounds dodge. i dont know, but the sheer processing power needed to scan your device constantly, check it against a DB and delete the content just sounds like overkill to me.

And with regards to those books, i dont think the actually "scanned" and "reached out" to your private Kindle to delete it.

they probably removed it from the Amazon servers Kindle section and there's some kind of device Sync that your kindle does and saw the item was marked to be removed for copyright purposes. They have to cover themselves for making mistakes.

You're 100% correct - they can sync against the list of the books you purchased from them .... and then? what gets deleted?

BTW - in the case discussed they paid $150k settlement!

Thats correct guys, africa WONT be getting alot of book titles. Dan Browns new novel isnt available, but they will be releasing Julius Malema's book: "A day in the life of an idiot"

Strangely enough, there is an amazon linked store with a ton of audio books for cheap prices. I thought great... signed up, let them verify my credit card by taking R12 off it. And then I couldnt download any of the titles I wanted cause it wasnt supported for my region: Africa.

I guess I would have to use a US proxy, but as mentioned... it is too much of a hassle.

I'd rather have the Sony Ebook reader that enables me to read PDFs as well.

K-Pax : whatever doesnt match :) So technically yes they still have control.

KillerX: Proxies dont always work. I tried once and at the very last stop got "Credit-card used not issued in United States of America" :)

Yes, card companies are feeding the greed by having country assignments in the card no. :)

But you can read PDFs on the kindle . . .
Content Formats Supported: Kindle (AZW), TXT, Audible (Audible Enhanced (AA, AAX)), MP3, unprotected MOBI, PRC natively; PDF, HTML, DOC, JPEG, GIF, PNG, BMP through conversion.

bwana : through conversion. further fineprint i've seen is that you u can only convert it through Amazon, at a fee of course.

INTERESTING TIMES

Look at The Bookseller Online

Also interesting to note it is less than 6 yrs since the iPod appeared.

And that Tom Doherty of the NY Times quips he's never met someone who regretted buying a e-book device

As one of the old farts of the SA book trade, I find it all pretty exciting!

with all those extras I want to see how much its going to cost- I hope they also bring out a basic model tho- without the touch/colour screen

I don't see the point in a hinged spine double page e-book reader in an e-context.
How many pages can one read simultaneously? (Boffins, Nobel Prize winners & Rain Man excluded :D )

Dan Brown is no better than Malema, his writing is non-intellectual drivel. At least Malama isn't pretentious.

Someone I know who's got a Kindle says: "Instead of paying with a credit card (so they know you are in SA) you buy a gift voucher and pay with that. Voila! No restrictions!"

That might have worked previously but with the intl version Amazon have sharpened their geo-restriction. People from Europe have reported not being able to do purchases even using a proxy. Don't know if it works for gift cards.

How are people from Europe "reporting" anything when the Kindle isn't even available yet?!

I'll be very disappointed if the availability of books doesn't change by the time the device is available here. I'm going to secretly hope that Amazon just hasn't sorted all the finer details out yet, and when the reader is actually released, we see a much wider selection on the store.

I did a few searches for some common titles and practically NONE of them were available; books which are available in-store here already. I understand that certain books will not be allowed to be sold here in South Africa, but if Exclusive Books can sell me a James Patterson book, then I am sure Amazon can as well.

I'll re-evaluate the purchase in a couple of weeks.

To the people moaning about the data charges and the cellular contracts - do your research before ranting.

It depends on the shipping address in Amazon, unless you're referring to downloads. Amazon doesn't mind that you pay with a Zim credit card, the product must ship to USA but you can pay with a Zim, Afghani, Korean, French, Brazilian or SA CC.
