Amazon Kindle for SA

Haven't heard of being able to use a proxy on the Kindle itself. Guess it's just best to download via USB if you don't want to pay the extra fee. At least we always have the option of downloading wirelessly for the extra fee (eg. if you away on holiday an don't have you laptop with).
There was a file you had to download to your Kindle to change the screensaver. If I'm correct, this hack does not work on the newest 2.3 firmware though...

My package arrived but DHL just called telling me I have to pay them R380 for customs and vat, but I already paid Amazon for this? Any ideas. I've emailed amazon.

customs duties are always seperate.

but besides that - what did you get an at what cost ?

But on the amazon checkout they add customs duties to the invoice and charged me R350 for it in addition to shipping charge.

exactly. customs & duties can be paid by the shipper, which in this case Amazon have done.

dhl must get their house in order.

those duties are never a sure thing and always fluctuates. Its a moving target. Did Amazon make you pay the VAT ?...... I woiuld still query it. Maybe its just DHL plaing silly buggers again.....

Have DHL not already paid the customs on your behalf (in error obviously - since Amazon has also paid it on your behalf). Seems that you now owe DHL the money, which means you're probably in for a rough road while you try convince DHL to take the matter up with customs.

Or I could have it completely backwards, though I am pretty sure that's how it worked when I ordered a lens and shipped via UPS (I paid UPS the customs fee).

All in all, I feel for you dude, good luck.

Sounds like DHL is at fault. Amazon also charged me the import duties and UPS delivered my Kindle with no extra charges by me.
Either fight with DHL or just give in and pay. Good luck dude!

Fight with DHL. They *CAN* get a refund from customs. I have made them get refunds before when they make a cockup.

According to amazon I can pay them and Amazon will refund me directly, but I'm going to take it up with dhl first (amazon assure me I shouldn't be paying anything extra).

Some advice, if Amazon will refund you, then rather get your refund from Amazon. If you try and query this with DHL it can take WEEKS because they are SO incompetant and will pass you from pillar to post, and back again.

Amazon have their **** in gear and are a pleasure to deal with.

I didnt pay a cent also not on other orders from Amazon.... but DHL is useless my kindle was stuck in customs for more than a week, they kept telling me it was SA Customs untill i found out from a friend at Fed-Ex at he said there was no issue.

Issue was with DHL's system they had a 5 day backlog....

I sympathize with you! It's almost NEVER customs. Customs is SARS and SARS is dead efficient!

DHL are complete morons! They once kept a shipment of mine delayed for ONE ENTIRE MONTH! The customs declaration had to be redone about 6 times! At one stage they were telling me they don't know what to do! I nearly blew my lid.

Agree here - rather get your money back from Amazon and pay DHL - gonna be a lot smoother.
From my experience UPS seems to be waaaaay better than DHL!
Let us know when you eventually get your Kindle :D

Do Amazon allow you to NOT pay the customs to them ? That would be simpler, then there is nothing to argue about on this side !
