Amazon Kindle for SA

You're absolutely right - prices for the US store. Add $2 for the SA store.
If you using a US store (which I hope you are) then just add your SA credit card to your account (Your Account - Manage Payment Options) and make sure your billing address is an SA address. You then should not be charged the $1.99 international delivery fee :D

I don't have one [yet] - I'm still thinking about it:D. But thanks for the info:)

No problem. We're here to help :D
If you're an avid reader then the Kindle is DEFINITELY a must!!!!! If you don't read a lot, then give it a skip. Just my 2c ;)

I haven't been reading novels in a while, but I'm keen on the Twilight Saga. Then I'll see from there.

Ah, cool. Maybe download Kindle for PC so long so that you can buy the Twilight books whilst they're cheap. Then you can always decide later if you want to get an actual Kindle :)

Damnit, I want a Kindle. But I also need to pay R3500 for studies. What's more important?

Seems there's a firmware update for the Kindle available. V2.30. Gives better battery life with Whispernet on and adds PDF support.

How do you guys like reading on the Kindle? I finished my first book on the Opus and it works nicely.

Yip, mentioned the update in an earlier post today :p Actually downloading the manual update now - don't want to wait for the automatic over-the-air update ;)

The Opus is pretty cool. I like the size of the Opus. For me the Amazon Kindle store (esp the wireless delivery) is a big seller!! Loving the Kindle - real awesome to read on too

PDF support! Wow, that's huge! Very awesome news...

I'm still waiting on mine.... Friend is bringing it back from New York. At least he has it in his possession.

New firmware not only has a longer battery life and PDF support, it also has manual screen rotation :D
Check out my post here.
I've manually downloaded the firmware but unfortunately my data cable is at home... :(

Could you not do the update on the Kindle itself? How big is the update?

Yip, Amazon actually does them over-the-air but they probably doing them in batches. I'm too impatient to wait for my batch to be upgraded. Anyone here in SA had theirs done over-the-air yet??

Ah, ok. I thought there was some sort of update feature on the Kindle where you could update manually like pc software, instead of waiting for the auto-update.

Ja, the only manual way is to actually copy the update file (about 10mb) onto the unit with the USB cable and then run the update through the menu. Will just have to do it when I get home

Oops, must have missed your post since I was browsing on my cell. Easy to skip something important.

For me that was the reason I opted for the Opus instead (that and the fact that I already ordered the Opus before the intl version was announced a week later). I didn't need wireless delivery and the fact that Amazon doesn't use an open format was a deal-breaker for me. I'd like to use my books on other devices without having to be locked into the Kindle.

Perhaps in the future Amazon will start offering ePub versions as well for non-Kindle users. Sony also have a large market share and they are switching over to ePub. Amazon would be slightly stupid to ignore those potential customers, especially when more and more manufacturers are releasing devices of their own.

True that! Seeing Amazon has such a large market share in the e-book world I'm also hoping that they will make their format more available on other devices and vice versa. Only time will tell. Nonetheless, loving my Kindle :D

Looks like Amazon is getting clever now. I was previously not charged the $1.99 download fee when buying books (from my US Amazon account). I just downloaded another book and was charged the extra $1.99. It is the first book since I've updated my Kindle's software to 2.3 so maybe Amazon fixed that "bug".
USB transfer it is... for now anyways... ;)

I'm just paying the 1.99. its the price of a coke, ill drink one less :)

Going to the beach for a week. Gonna give the Kindle a run for its money as I lie and tan! :)
