Amazon Kindle for SA

Seems like the Kindle joy is spreading - everyone's getting a Kindle for Christmas. Awesome!! :D

Yep. Although I guess this won't ever become an "iPod" of e-book readers in SA as Amazon's general marketing isn't very focused here. I still find people who says "What's a Kindle?". About the only people that know are geeks and people who watch Oprah!

Yup I have had to explain a few times... and then people are like "o so you only read books" lol.... then they reckon if it reads for them lol

I dont really get the it, I love reading because it is so descriptive but the text to speech has a long way to go before it will match up....

True, not many ppl here in SA even know what an e-reader is. I have seen that some ppl do know about about e-books though (on their computers or cellphones) but weren't aware that there are actually dedicated devices for e-books. Spread the word guys, spread the word :D

@herbertk: Suprisingly all those aren't pirated books. Most of them are freebies I've collected over the years, but never got round to reading. I also got a Baen webscription as a freebie for signing up - 8 books. Baen gets what ebooks are about and their free library contains hundreds of books for fantasy/scifi fans.

Cool... will check it out thanks ... I find alot of the free book a little unreadable... unless they are classics like jules verne etc.... :D

Baen has some big names on their roster - John Ringo, David Weber, Greg Bear, Ben Bova etc. So they should be good.

Tor also had very nice freebies. I still need to convert the PDF's to ePub though (I prefer using one format).

For classics go to www.gutenberg.org they have nearly everything and even offer many books in mobipocket format (if not you can use mobipocket software for your pc to convert files).
Remember it's all free and legal - copyright has passed on all their books and SA copyright law is less restrictive than US law so really no concerns.

It is actually a very interesting consept but is all public domain works.... You can actually help out and check scanned pages for them.... very interesting...

I hope publishers now start realizing its easier to publish electronicaly from the beginning lol...

I bought a Belkin case - prefer this design of bag - one where I can pack my Kindle away in but allows me to read my Kindle without it being attached to the device.

I bought the "Amazon Kindle Leather Cover" that Amazon recommended when I made the purchase. Can't vouch for it yet though, as I haven't received it. Tonight is the night though! (Friend from NY is in town and coming for dinner) :P

Sure you must be excited :D

I am, but I can't get TOO excited. The Kindle is a Xmas gift for my fiancee. I think she wants to wait until the 25th to open it. I'm hoping when she sees it tonight she decides that she can't wait another 10 days... :P

I got my wife a Kindle for Christmas, as well as the Amazon leather cover. Only gave her the leather cover so far and hid the kindle. :)

From what I can see is the leather cover is well made, but if you a) don' like extra weight and b) are worried about the corners, get another case.

For my own Kindle (which I am also to receive on Christmas) it might be necessary to order another case. It actually seems cheaper to import it from Amazon than order from something like Have2Have... So I thought I'd wait until Christmas, see how the native Amazon one fits on my wife's Kindle and then decide whether I want to buy the Belkin or Amazon one.

I suggest you read the reviews for the Amazon cover (and others that use the hinge system) they all break the kindle with regular use if you plan on bending the cover back that's why I chose a silicone (which I had to order from take2).

Ugh, read some of the 1 star reviews for the Amazon cover and it doesn't look good. Nice that the Americans have the option of sending it back - bit more difficult for us lowly South Africans to get a replacement device should it crack.

I will definitely get a more secure one. I see some people suggest you stick velcro to the underside of the Kindle to "force" it against the backside of the cover, another person suggested a "book band" which sounds like a rubber band or something.

Anybody any troubles with their Kindle and Official Kindle cover?

Just go Nike on your own ass - do it! ;)

Since I got mine, I'm actually reading more than usual, because it is so convenient, and so easy to get the book I want when I want it, without first having to drive somewhere.
