That other country, the Republic of South Africa will more than likely declare war on the new republic.
South Africa’s biggest forum. Discuss, discover, and connect with thousands of members.
It will inevitably result in a civil war and given that many of the South African government's military installations are all over the Western Cape (Ysterplaat, SA Navy @ Simon's Town & Saldanha, etc etc) there may be some difficulty and any secession attempt will probably be crushed quickly.@ all legal eagles out there :
I know it's been laughed off before, but what would the stumbling blocks be to a serious secession attempt?
I mean The Cape Republic could be the first real multiracial, mulicultural success - couldn't it?

I think the last successful attempt by a region seceding to form a sovereign state was Eritrea (1994?) and if memory serves that was with the aid of the UN.
Technically, Orania is a secession attempt, so perhaps there is a chance for Cape Town...

Obviously the ANC feels threatened and feels sore about handing over any power locally to anyone else. This is akin to what Chavez did in Venezuela where he appointed governors to overule any local mayors, even though the mayors themselves were democratically elected.
ANC are just sore loosers and want to ensure control - at all costs. It's dangerous but it's also something we can expect from them.
I thought I made it clear it is possible?Anyone with access to legal textbooks etc. who could see if there are in fact any precedents for secession anywhere?
Maybe someone who could say if it could be done - not why it can't be done.
Escaping “discriminatory redistribution,” i.e., tax schemes, regulatory policies, economic programs, etc. that distribute resources away to another area, especially in an undemocratic fashion
I thought I made it clear it is possible?
There is no legal precedent for this in SA. Just bear in mind it may be construed as a coup attempt by the ANC government. The difficulty will be in that it will not be a peaceful secession in any way. But possible it very much is. As for your poll later on:
IF it were not rendered a war zone, I would move to the Cape Republic in a heart beat.
