Android mini pc

So many variants of these devices, without too many reviews. Other issue bothering me is availability of roms as new versions of android come out - not sure which device manufacturer to go with.

Confused :wtf:

I'm thinking the Ouya might be a good bet as far as updates and multi-purpose is concerned.

After some more digging, I see you can use any USB game pad with the 808b (or any variation I'd imagine), including the option to pair your PS3 Dual Shock controller to it. For the money, that's a lot of bang for your buck. Worst case scenario is I don't like it, in which case my 4 year old will end up using it for games.

This was the review I checked out on the device.

I do wonder though whether DX is selectively choosing their product reviews. Here are reviews of the same/similar products from Amazon. The Amazon reviews are in general less favourable.

Some early Ouya reviews. There seems to be some disagreement about the 1080p XBMC performance judging by one of the comments.
Ouya vs G-Box Midnight MX2 (one of the best XBMC android media players)

Ouya XBMC performance (hard to believe it works as well as an i7 though!)

I am looking for a reason to buy one of these, but cant think of one :o I just want one to play with so its hard to justify.

Most of them are chinese imports - I bought 3 of those (http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/item/1197...nasty_Quad_Core_1_6GHz_CPU_2GB_RAM_Black.html) for our monitoring dashboards (plug into HDMI port and power via USB port on TV). Those are RK3188 dongles (http://qc802.com/#!/home) and Gingerbread is supposedly coming out towards end of January as an upgrade.

I think in most cases you will pay about R900 for the device - shipping will hit you with another 200-300 bucks though (didn't pay import duties on the order of 3).

I'm thinking of strapping one to a Monitor and using it as an arcade machine in my entertainment area

I have got one, don't use it much since I originally got it to make a standard TV a smart TV. It is easy to use and you can d/load lots of good stuff from the Play Store

Also programmed Linux on a SD card and can boot up in that.

The only critisism I have is that the picture is a bit soft. It will manage 1024 x 768, a bit poor nowadays
