Android smartphones will offer 5G before Apple

As for the point of 5G...it's still a very non-thing and I also don't see the point of why anyone (Apple and everyone else) should be jumping to put it in their phones for any other reason than marketing.

The industry is hardly ready for it, never mind the physical networks.

Due to the way it works it's also not going to happen very fast.

Wouldn't be surprised if it's not even in 2019 phones, because it's real world use case will probably only come to fruition by 2021-2022.
 
Just on this point LED and LCD are the same...in that the actual screens are all LCD's.

It's simply the back light that differs and used LEDs instead of fluorescent or other tech.

You can be pretty sure the Liquid Retina does in fact use LED back lighting, but is still called an LCD because that's what the screen itself is.

Yes it branched, out so what, why are you dead set keeping it on the 5G only, do you have some thing lose. ?
It's completely relevant as it still discusses whether or not early adoption of tech is wise or pointless.
Case and point, Core2quad CPU's was another 5 or 6 years before they actually became useful by that time they were already outdated and replaced by much faster and newer tech.

Same applies here, there ZERO gain from being the first to the market with 5G, other then bragging rights which boils down "My phone has 5G, shame you still stuck on 4G, have a tissue....". Everyone and anyone will always try and upstage some one else, be it for bragging rights or for financial gain, it is the natural order of my pointy stick is bigger than your point stick.It's clear you have a sweeping declaration that calling it any thing other then bragging rights at this point in time, is taboo.Do you have ANY evidential proof to suggest otherwise ?

The problem I have is calling LED screen the same as LCD screen, LED is different in the way it operates, it's a subset of LCD as they do differ in the way they operate.While both may use liquid crystals, they use different technologies.
So no, they aren't exactly the same thing, they do differ.

No, you still aren't getting it.

CCFL + LCD
LED + LCD

The LCD part remains the exact same, only the backlight changes.

It's not a subset, it doesn't work differently. It's the same thing using a different back light.

The LCD (which remains the same) simply goes on top of the CCFL backlight or on top of the LED backlight which is the modern common choice as seen on most TV's (which is why they call themselves LED) and phones.

OLED is the only thing with LED in it's name that is truly different because each pixel is an LED in and of itself that also lights itself up and therefore doesn't need a backlight like LCD (CCFL or LED) does and also why they can be truly black because the pixel can switch off, unlike LCD (both CCFL and LED) which will always remain "grey" due to backlight being always on.

LCD = Screen Technology, LED = A light.

However I don't blame you for getting it wrong as it's a product of shitty marketing and as such you aren't quite wrong in having a problem the way it's named. It should have been called LCD+LED or even better LCD lit by LED instead of just blanketing it all with LED and then having people believe it's a magically new and different thing.

The majority of iPhones are LED backlit LCD displays. In fact I think the very first one might have already been LED backlit but don't quote me on that as I never worked on any of those.

In fact I would go so far as to say I don't think there are many, if any CCFL based LCD smart or dumb phones out there as there simply isn't enough space in the devices to facilitate that and it would probably murder the batteries even more.

Well some one has to pay for the patents, production facility upgrade and R&D, you don't simply just start production.

For sure but that would happen with a new model device regardless.

But a change from 4G class modems to 5G class modems isn't done by the manufacturers anyway but provided by Intel or Qualcomm etc and sold on to phone manufacturers.
 
As a matter of interest, what are the advantages of 5G over 4G?

My understanding is massively increased download speeds so you can watch HD movies on the fly (erm.... at the cost of data here in SA....)

Also seems that networks will take at least until 2020 to roll out the necessary support infrastructure even in places like the UK.

In theory it should surpass the requirement for high speed physical networks like fibre because it will be virtually on par.

Which changes the game in the way that content gets delivered and where and how.

Ultimately it also means digital migration towards completely dropping conventional analog calls as broadband becomes a truly normal every day thing as much as voice calls have become on our daily lives.

Meaning cost should also go down in time or a lot of things start to get zero rated where the overall cost goes down.

Also meaning mobile service providers enter new revenue streams like serving video and media content much like we’ve already seen with CellC’s Black but across the world this is becoming more of a trend as they realise they can’t make money on calls any more or when data itself and rather need to sell the thing that uses that data.

The physical network will take a while to upgrade as you have something like 500x the amount of towers than you needed before but this is also why it will be rock solid and on par with terrestrial wired networks.

On the backend size there is even more work to be done as there will be more data than ever going into systems for billing records etc.

Also it will make the concept of everything in the cloud more valid than ever.

There’s a good reason Microsoft for instance want to offer a Cloud-only console and related services in their next generation line up because that kind of thing becomes possible now when everyone gets access to ninja broadband speeds and low latency.
