Make them pay I say!!

It's the few that ruin it for the rest. It's the same with elecricity crisis in this country... we get things for cheap (or free as it was assumed by many that this uncapped local would be!) and too many people out there abuse it! We then end up with bandwidth problems, electricity shortages etc etc.

K_k and betaal!! And stop milking the system for all it is worth!

I strongly disagree.

I agree that they should pay because Telskom even told people they would have to pay. It is not right though.

If the uncapped were free, I'd milk it as well. Local doesn't cost Telkom anything. Ridiculous even to have that as a concept.

I love constructive discussions and debates.... but I am still not sure what you are disagreeing with?

It is true that the few ruin it for the rest. It is fact. We have all read how Telkom use a collective cap and once the "collection" of people go over this cap they used to start hard capping, so those 100Gb people ruin it for the other 30, 40Gb'ers. But once again the attitude is that it is all about me!

Related to this, we are terribly wasteful with elecricity in this country. I do not know of many people who consciously try to save power... even now when we know about the crisis. The attitude is that we are entitled. Now would this same attitude prevail if you had to k_k and betaal for this wastefulness at the end of every month instead of having amongst the cheapest power in the world?

The power issue is separate imo.

When it comes to internet in this country our options are pathetic. We should be able to download as much free content as possible. ICASA says we should, hence the feeling that we need to get as much out of it/from Telkom whenever we can.

You might say it is selfish but I totally understand it.

We may all have our idealistic visions of what we would like internet access in this country to be like going forward but unfortunately you still need to play within the rules at the time.

Yes, I too would like unlimited bandwidth at a cheap cost but we do not have this at the moment and I am at a loss to see how milking the system for all it is worth at the moment will help us to achieve this? Especially when it is at the expense of others using the system... whether through slower download speeds for them or hardcapping due to the collective threshhold being reached... but once again I suppose it's all about ME.

I download what I need every month and still battle to use my 30GB local. You are clearly just raping the system if you are downloading 180Gb per month.... like someone admitted earlier, their friend does not even listen to all he downloads. Pure waste!

Like someone else said, in other countries with real internet 180GB is not a lot at all. It is not that hard to download that much stuff and use it.

Have you not read the tons of articles on US providers shaping/blocking P2P and cutting off users? People don't download terabytes of data (from another post) without anyone taking notice.

Personally I would never get to over 200GB a month, I just don't want that much stuff from the internet. :eek: You've got to be pretty bored to just keep downloading throughout the month. Would you even watch 180GB worth of vids, or play the games etc that you download?

so embrace the future now. instead of complaining of people using more bandwidth than you.

I pay over R600 a month just to have my adsl sit there and look at me. Ill be dammed if I dont make the most of it.
 
Except this is not 10 years down the line. Anyway people are worried that if their are not huge changies to the internet we might all end up in a grid-lock. In other words the entire system might fall apart.

Are you American? Still under the delusion that by 'in other countries' I meant the US? Come now. Ever heard of a whole continent called Asia?

I know 200GB sounds a lot but as someone mentioned it is a little more than 6.5GB a day. I do not think it is that hard to do. And I certainly don't think that it helps the cause to say that so much usage constitutes abuse.

I would say that a 30GB international cap is a reasonable starting point. Granted, there are a lot of people who wouldn't even use this much. On the other hand, maybe they would if they knew what all they could do on the internet were capping restrictions less ridiculous in this country.

Apart from illegal downloads, which seems to be all that people ever think people are using their bandwidth on, there are also legal downloads. Streaming video, radio, video-conferencing and calling, VOIP...The list goes on. All this costs bandwidth. But this is why we have the internet,

As the internet has developed with newer high-bandwidth technologies on offer, South African 'broadband' has not.

As to watching 180GB of videos or playing that many games. That is not that difficult at all.

Also, a box set of HD- quality will run into the terabytes, never mind 180GB. Bandwidth abuse indeed. Formats keep getting bigger yet caps don't change. Don't hate the player, hate the game.

You're breaking the law and now you're blaming Telkom cause they're charging you for the stuff you stole???

Using a lot of bandwidth does not mean doing anything illegal.

Downloading copyrighted content is copyright infringement, not stealing.

For the 1000th time.
