Anyone being nawty?

It should be telkoms fault. If they don't decide to cap the individual, then its there problem if they use 200gb +.
 
When I made comments earlier about being happy that these heavy users were getting made to pay and I said I felt they were spoiling it for everyone else and being selfish I obviously got objections. I also got told that only in South Africa do we have this happening and these limitations!!

Bandwidth demands in the USA have been doubling each year for some time, according to Tom Donnelly, cofounder of Sandvine, a network management firm. As this trend continues, Donnelly says, it puts pressure on ISPs and on applications such as file-sharing software and streaming multimedia content, giving ISPs an incentive to clamp down on heavy bandwidth users.

LOL, you think we don't know this?

How about improving the limited broadband 'pipes' that are getting so clogged then? Not long ago local was free and completely uncapped. I don't remember anything drastic happen that made them change that, except because they wanted to.

We are ruining it for other people?

Please. Telkom is ruining it for everyone!

I think you are missing the point that it is foreign providers in that article that are having problems with bandwidth due to over use, not South African ones.

Comcast spokesperson, Charlie Douglas, explains that a single customer who uses disproportionately more bandwidth than his or her neighbours can slow down the Internet for everyone on the block.

Overuse overseas is one thing, overuse here is a completely different thing. What we have here would not constitute abuse in most other countries around the world.

What we need is an improvement in our infrastructure.

But once I again I ask you, why was local uncapped and free for so long, before being arbitrarily capped?

I think this thread answers that question. When the system was not being abused there was no capping, now that there is abuse everyone must suffer.

You said it, we do not currently have the infrastructure to enable each internet user to download 200Gbs of unnecessary garbage every month! Especially if this means a decrease in speeds for those of us trying to use the internet in a reasonable fashion!

So you say it was due to abuse? I am completely unaware of this ever being mentioned when the cap was implemented. Do you have ant proof?

Which meant arbitrarily capping local at an arbitrary point and thereafter charging a ridiculous per gig amount, when ICASA have told them for years that local must be free.

Well I clearly recall reading about Telkom implementing a collective cap system where once the collective went over a certain limit they would start hard capping... so yes i would say it was due to abuse. Not sure I really want to bother searching to find that as "proof" but you can if you bored.

I am also still missing how when you get told with every Gb you get 10Gb local free you can then draw the conclusion that this means unlimited local free!! Are you the type that stands at a promotional table and eats all the sample popcorn etc because it is after all free!

Can you honestly tell me that you can listen to or watch (or whatever you are doing with it) 200Gb worth of music or movies every month? I download my 30Gb (managed it once in two years) and battle to get around to watching all of that... and some CDs I have still not listened to. So unless you have no life off of your PC then I still think unnecessary garbage

It is not at all arbitrary... for every 1Gb international you get 10Gb local... very specific in fact!

And because action groups say housing should be free, it just should be?

Allegations without proof are meaningless. It is up to you to provide the proof, not me.

Before November 2006 local was completely uncapped and completely free. Do you understand that?

You are free to think that. It is not the case I am afraid. I already mentioned that formates keep getting bigger and bigger. 200Gb would perhaps get you one season of a series in HD format.

Also, it is not just downloading movies and series, as has been mentioned above, a lot.

I would say 200GB was certainly a lot to do in one month but it certainly isn't impossible nor excessive.

LOL, this confirms you must work for Telkom.

Action groups indeed. Why do you think they said that local should be free?

The fact that Telkom are a monopoly means that they can do what they want, cap when and where they want. Which they have done, a lot, in the past.

Really? Where does it say that local must be free?

Unless I'm missing something the closest the regs get is that "Local bandwidth usage shall not be subject to the cap". :o

Fine. I retract that. I must go and read the regulations once more to find out exactly what they said. Either way, local as a concept is ridiculous and something that you only find in SA.

It does not change the fact that Telkom pay almost nothing for it and yet want to charge R25.50/gig once you hit your 'cap'. Pathetic.

With a cable system, like in the US, One person pulling a few hundred TB a month, will affect the rest of the 'block' on that same cable. We have ADSL. Does not work the same.

"so scr_w the neighbours" is not the mentality I have in a situation like this. It's more like, I am paying line rental for this 384kbps line of mine. Paying and paying and paying every month - heck , I guess I've paid enough by now to OWN a couple of these puny little things. But that's just my boiling blood talking there...

My main concern at the moment is, that you Assume that one person (ab)using his adsl line, is spoiling it for everyone else ... While that is not the case.

It's something totally different if you use your bandwidth on other stuff (youtube, gaming, etc.) There's no need to download every single movie, tv episode & game that gets released every month. Those are normally the people who downloads it to sell it again to the public.

I own the Smallville boxset. Seasons 1 - 4. I have one dvd that is damaged hence I have downloaded the damaged episodes from newshost before.

That was legal.

People don't understand that. They think that any download off the internet is illegal. Quite frankly, it's rather pathetic.
