Apple has lost it's innovation

Really? You have all the movies and tv shows on the SA Android Market Place that the USA Android Market Place??? If that is the case, I will eat my hat. App Store differences in regions is a content provider issue. Not Apple, Google or Amazon's issue.

Just to enlighten.

Android has the same limitations re: books, movies and music but can be fixed by using a Proxy service. You don't need to open a fake account.
Android does have access to the games and other applications that a local Apple apstore account lacks.

On the 50 MB limit, it does limit the App size to 50 MB and the data files then prompt if you want to use WiFi or 3G. Some Applications like Gameloft games dont give you this option and also force you to WiFi only, but I suspect this is due to the code being ported from iOS.

Using a Proxy has the same effect as regional account. The implementation is different (IP Address vs Credit Card location).
The effect is the same

My point with Flash, that everyone told me it was dead ... not an issue ... never run into a problem ... yet within a week I ran into numerous sites that couldn't be accessed or multimedia content that couldn't be played. We've discussed Flash many times, so we don't need to discuss it again - but realise having no Flash does cause limitations

Camera - although crappy - doesn't bother me with using it as a camera, but it limits applications too. I gave an example of Google Goggles, but there are others. I read an interview with a developer saying the 15 year old camera limits him ...

Hotspot was an issue as at one stage, I had tons of data on the microSIM that I couldn't use. I wanted Garageband and although I had the data, there was nothing I could do to use it. So I had even MORE data than I expected and thought I could use it as a hotspot ... but that can't be done either. Basically - I lost all my data month end because Apple gives you no way to use it.

You explained it SMS - and I understand how it works, it's still limiting that you can't follow your bundle. I'm not the only one - check here http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/410207-Vodacom-website-off It's a really stupid move that other tablets can do. 3G routers generally do work (USSD) and as the SIM has a telephone number, it can be done on the iPad. It's purposely not activated, as JB can do it

Regarding the limit - that's stupid too. It's prevents me downloading a 400MB Garageband from the appstore - but going to Newstand and downloading a 400MB magazine is alright from the same, same network? Where's the logic?

Yes and no, one is changing the way you access the market the other is actively commuting fraud, anyway I did not post it here to discuss which is better. Just to state that it is neither Apple or Google's to blame for the limitations.

The reason we are excluded from the content is because of lack of provisions for it in our local laws + virtual borders created by the media industry.

Flash - Apple decided that because of the effect it has on battery and stability, it was worth not allowing, even if it meant some sites weren't accessible. And yes, you do run into them every now and then. However, because of the iPhone not allowing it, many sites have now transitioned away. So running into flash sites occurs less and less. And I (personally) am thankful for that. but your mileage may vary. But you can surely understand Apples reasoning. Even if you don't agree with it.

The Camera - Not really an issue as you said

Hotspot - As I said, if the antenna supported it, and they disabled that functionality, then that is poor form from them

SMS - I didn't say it wasn't technically possible. I said it doesn't fit the non-phone product they created. And I used to have a 3g Router. It didn't receive or at least had no way of displaying SMS's. Maybe they do now as you say. Or maybe you are thinking of those 3G USB dongle things

The limit. They should definitely not allow downloading of 400mb magazines using 3G. It is inconsistent, and could result in some people unexpectedly having very high data bills

You are 100% correct (Although I would say you would be on shaky legal ground for spoofing IP address as well)

The restriction on the App store in SA isn't totally Apple's fault and it certainly isn't due to a poor device.
Not having all apps available is entirely their fault.

In the last few months I've listed a number of issues, like lack of lack of Flash, lack of hotspot, 3G limit, no SMS, weak app store, shoddy camera, download issues and numerous others. Only to be hit 'We don't care!' 'We don't use it!' 'Never experienced it! 'Buy an Android!' 'Silly feature!' 'Use this workaround!' ... there's no sense in him even listing any other product when the reply is very predictable
No text messaging is just silly. That the iPad does not otherwise act as a phone is no reason for it to lack SMS support.

No it's not. When you submit an app to the App Store, you select which countries your app is available in. It has bugger all to do with Apple, and is completely up to the content owners

It needs to accept SMSs - to get the ISP warning on your data package. Otherwise you're stick phoning the call centre and or logging a website which doesn't always work http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/410207-Vodacom-website-off

Having the ability to receive an SMS doesn't mean anyone will text from it. My phone has the ability to MMS - but I don't

Ok, given that Apple won't add that ability in, have you asked your SP to send the notification to another address or to email you? Vodacom can send to a different phone number.
I know it's not the solution you want, but it is the reality of the situation

He's not interested in solutions.

... that's more a workaround, again

A solution would be a direct fix - which as he said, will never be implemented.

No, because it doesn't fit into the product experience that Apple wants. And I have never seen any review (From reputable publications or otherwise) that said it did SMS or indicated that Apple would ever add it in.

But you can either continue moaning about it, accept it and be happy, or find some other way to get what you want.
Those are the 3 options you are facing, And I have suggested how you could achieve the last. But you seem to prefer the first. And that just doesn't seem very productive

So wait - if a n00b come along, am I allowed to tell him the negatives of the iPad?
Or would you prefer I kept quiet too?

It seems to be a secret pact of Apple owners to only let out the positives and goes against everything if someone dares bring up a negative. I have and I'm ousted from your Apple club :'(

By the way, Apple is obviously doing something wrong if 2 million guys JB their devices within a week of them launching. It won't happen - but I can hope for the day Apple says : guys, we'll let you think a little ... what do you want in your device?

There in lies the rub. They launch 1 version of the device every 12 months on average, how are they to cater for 20 million users and their personal wish lists??? They do what they can to bring a balance to the product and for the most part they doing an outstanding job...

0.8% of iOS devices.

Of course you should tell him if he asked.
I dislike it when people come along to an apple thread where people are excited talking about some product or other and start mouthing off about what they perceive to be flaws (These flaws are valid for some people, but not for others). Just let them enjoy it.
And when asked about the product, and you explain, be reasonable and explain it's limitations, but also explain why Apple likely made those decisions (And no, Coporate $uxors leachers Capitalims Evil isn't being reasonable).
Let the person then decide if they like or dislike those limitations.

(And sure, I think there are flaws in many of their products that don't have a reasonable explanation. But they are not the flaws you are talking about generally. Excepting the hotspot one)
