Apple iPad 3 is here

Well I think that Apple stuffed up big time on the name issue. New iPad ? they could have been more creative about it and given it a proper identity. iPad 3 or iPad HD would have been far better.

I for one, will not be rushing out to sell my iPad 2 to get a "new iPad". Screen is lovely, but it will take some time for app developers to modify their apps to make the most of that screen.

One other thing that is particularly confusing, is the issue about Siri. They seemed to sideline the topic by saying it has voice recognition, but no mention of Siri. Why not ? If the iPhone 4S can have it, then surely the new iPad can have it ?

I am also peeved that the new IOS 5.1 software (I have been trying to download, but the servers are so busy), won't enable Siri on the iPad 2 (apparantly - I am yet to find out). I am not about to jailbreak my iPad to get Siri

The camera ? 5 MP is okay on the back, although they were quite capable of putting an 8 MP there. What peeves me is Apple keeping a VGA camera on the front WTF ? So for Skype video, my friends are going to have to put up with looking at a grainy picture. They could have put a 2 MP on the front.

I reckon the best bet is a wifi iPad with a small wireless modem (like the R201) that you can carry around. Like mentioned, the 3G is limited ... Limits on what/how much can be downloaded, certain apps won't work with it, no warning of OOB shark etc

The downside is carrying another device ... Meaning you'll be carrying the iPad, the modem and your iTunes notebook around to make it functional

Use your phone to create a wifi hotspot. (I know android and Iphone allows you to do this - have not tested it though).
One thing though is that the 3g Ipad comes with GPS - wifi only one does not (or this was the case with ipad 1). Still, dont need it.

I use my iPhone as a hotspot instead, no extras needed.

Little bit disappointed in the release, but maybe there is a general feeling that there is nothing wrong with the old iPad, so nothing, looks wise, needs to change.

But I am a bit confused by:
The newest iPad will be capable of operating on a high-speed 4G “LTE” or Long-Term Evolution network. At speeds roughly 10 times faster than current 3G technology, that may help banish the sometimes shaky video quality of older devices.
Current 3G technology, imo, would refer to HSPA+ which currently sits at 42Mbps. Current LTE technology using hte same spectrum is sitting around 40-50Mbps. The only way that sentence can be seen as "true" is if they refer to the original 3G spec running at 3.6Mbps@5Mhz, and if that is the case and it is current for them they must be reaaalllly behind the times.

So the question, did they lie to make there product better, was this added by the author with lack of understanding/information, or do they really live in an area with such an outdated network?

But for the product, guessing the iPad will remain that "stable","boring" product that just works and does what most people need with an excellent GUI feeling, and will keep selling remarkably well.

Expect a lot of iPad 2's up for sale soon.

Bargain hunters, start up your engines! :)

Congrats to Mybb for some good pre-launch rumour scouting. They were quite accurate with the predicted specs - the screen res and the quad processor.

Apple has no interest in being creative with their names, they're interested in brand identity and recognition. Just calling it the iPad was exactly what was needed and it matches the naming of most of their product line now.

Apple seems to be having issues scaling Siri to meet the demand just with the iPhone 4S at the moment so I'm not surprised they are holding it back on the other devices.

will have to see what the local pricing will be, at least in short term... i'm sure there is still lots of iPad2 stock around that the stores would like to move out first.
Hopefully a few good sales deals of iPad2 soon, like when it was the new model.
Still, the Windows7 Dell tablet, upgraded to Win8 I have works extremely good for all i need, and being windows, no compatibility issues, especially considering the Windows dominated world at the office.
My wife truely enjoys her iPad2 everyday, but every now and then i have to hear that something doesnt work on IOS.
But when I look at it, and what she can do with it, thinking how far we've come in tech, it is still an amazing piece of hardware, so iPad3 should be even better

Sjoe, would be really nice to be able to remote desktop into your PC at home with Full 1080P upscaled while still looking crisp.

Now if only I wasn't a poor bastard :(

Ah, I see what you are getting at... sort of like the 2012 iPad ?

But, what if two are released in the same year ?

Maybe 2012-3 iPad for this one, and in six month's time perhaps the 2012-9 iPad...

I think that you will run into some problems calling it The New iPad... the next one will become The Even Newer iPad, and next year's one will be The Brandest Even Newest iPad! Maybe just call it the Sell Your Current iPad ?

Ipad 12.03 12.09 .... lol ubuntu style naming!

The only thing that might make a difference is the processor upgrade, and I don't think I'm willing to sell my iPad 2, and buy an iPad 3 just for that.

I'll wait for a later release.

I believe that is not the point. A new device has just been released with better specs than the older one and roughly the same price. I don't believe people with iPad 2's will require the upgrade now but when software becomes heavier and graphics become slower for example, this need may arise on the iPad 4 for example.

The screen is incredible. I really think Apple is setting a standard here - hopefully this will start blowing over to other tablets as well as notebooks.

I mean, name ONE notebook where you can get this screen resolution, at a decent price, right now? And now you can get it on a tablet!

The other features are pretty meh, in my opinion. If they can do LTE for 9 hours straight, it would be pretty amazing, but yeah, useless in SA. I am a bit concerned that there are two LTE versions - one for Verizon, one for AT&T, so which one will Apple bring into SA if we don't have a single LTE network yet?

I have loaded IOS 5.1 on my iPhone 4S, so far the battery definitely seems better. Other than that, no earth shattering changes!

sold my ipad 2 a week ago !

paid R5699....sold it for R5100.

wanted to beat the rush of second hand ipad 2.

Ha I beat you to it, Bought my iPad 2 for R 4500 (import) and sold it for R7000 last year already.

Only thing is I am still using the 1st Gen, as its good enough for me :)

Will probably get someone to bring in the "new iPad" sometime at the end of the month, will decide later if I will keep it or sell it again. Only this time I have to make sure its 3G and not LTE.
