Yup, Vodacom has no experience in bringing in new handsets, creating product offerings around them, distributing them to shops and supporting them. Never done it before.
On the other hand you have a handset manufacturer that's got many years experience in building handsets, exporting them to diverse international markets, understand how the much more mature mobile operators outside the US works and have no desire to try and dictate how the products should be structured. Oh, and nearly forgot, have endless supply of stock.
So, you're right. Does not say much about Vodacom.

So V3G if someone buys a Iphone from Vodafone UK and bring it to SA will it work on Vodacom network? (Without hacking it)

Like you come to SA on Holiday and buy a prepaid VC sim instead of roaming on Vodafone sim.

Wonder if Vodacom will ever get back to people who pre registered on their website?
Most important question for me is if the features of the iPhone will be fully supported by Vodacom - i.e. Will we get the visual voicemail feature?

I sure did. Was up at 4:30 AM from the excitement. Got to the shop at 7 am and there was about 20 people. Out of those only 5 were pre-registered (including me) so we got priority before everyone else; turns out they only had 6 handsets in stock for Prepaid!! and about 10 for contracts, which was a bit of an upset for the people who didn't pre-register. I was very lucky to get one though (considering the dramas that went on around the country). I went with prepaid because signing a contract right now would be stupid: $729 for the 8GB model - a bit ouch but definitely worth it.
Edit: Forgot to mention - I went with Optus because Vodafone and Telstra's plans were an absolute joke (Telstra only included 5 MB of data with their highest plan.. wtf).
