Application for designing wood work schematics?

I looking to start doing some home DIY projects. I'm looking for a simple, preferably free, program to help me design wood work schematics in 3D. For example I want to design a cat box/playhouse for the kitty cat.

Yes Sketchup would work nicely as stated above

This will also depend on if you are going to be printing lofts for cutting the wood.

If so then a home A4 printer will probably be too small and you will need to have these done at a printing company. Check what your local company accepts in terms of file formats and work back to the software from that point.
