Are Openweb throttling capped accounts?

You are only softcapped once you reach your purchased data.

Not before.

Capped accounts are unshaped and unthrottled before reaching its cap.

The point of a softcap so that clients at least have internet after reaching their cap.

Aaaah, that would explain why my daytime speeds were k@k, should have told me about the cat before I left OW.

As someone on a capped account I find it a little silly. Just give me access to the user CP rather than the way it works now.

As to how it works, you might want to double check this. I can assure you that the connection was running at max line speed until an nntp download started. It only then throttled the line, so it seems to operate in a shaping pool. So either it's not working as expected or something else is afoot. I tested this on multiple occasions.

Gonna have to avoid using the "we never throttle" marketing now...

I would not be impressed to be beta tested on while under the guise that my account is "working".

Next question should be... is OW doing away with capped accounts?

No, we are improving our Capped products by adding a Softcap, opposed to a hardcap in the near future

So it will be an Uncapped account with a known threshold before you are throttled (softcapped)?

Isn't Telkom capped accounts already like this? Just ask them for the setup details. Then you don't need to test on unaware customers?

how exactly are you testing it on customers that don't know they have a softcap? They wouldn't hit the cap limit because they think they're hardcapped and your tests won't exactly provide any usable data.

Is it norm in this industry to test live accounts without their consent? :wtf:
For these exact reasons - something goes wrong and the customer deals with the k@k...

Had he/I known about this, we'd have immediately known that the account was capped and no Telkom callout and no half a day testing would have been necessary.

cableguy has sent a few extra gigs my way as a token of appreciation, and it is appreciated, but it costs nothing to test on dummy accounts instead. Set a tiny cap and test it yourself.

I also cannot see the benefit in testing this in a live environment, because as cableguy stated, it failed/didn't operate the way it was intended on this account.

The issue with it not working, and it looking, feeling and smelling like shaping, is that regardless of the reasons, I am left wondering whether the softcap was an easy excuse (like the Telkom excuse) and this was in fact just shaping being applied. Occam's razor. Either there was live testing of an odd system on a customer account and it failed dismally, or the account was shaped.

Actually either way I can confirm that the account was shaped. There's no two ways about it. It's whether this was as a result of live testing of an odd softcap system, or whether it is standard practice that was picked up on by me...

THis sounds alot like another ISP, who improved my product experience with a soft cap, but at least it was on an uncapped service.

To be capped on a capped service .... mon œil, merde.

Openweb is NOT a member of the ISPA and not subject to their governance................

Their upstream providers are, and their contract will in all likelihood require them to conduct business within the ISPA code of governance...

Ye, I haven't been the biggest OpenWeb fan boy, but I must say. I don't see why people complaining about getting trialed. You are getting free data once you capped after all. I don't see any cons here.

I must say I really like the move towards softcapped products

My experience with OpenWeb products is that they only work to specification once you have complained about them not working to specification, and then they get magically "fixed", if only temporarily or with a new login. It leaves one wondering about less tech savvy clients blindly paying out for an inferior product. Of all the ISPs I have used in the past, I never had to contact support as frequently as I did with OpenWeb.
