Article: Darren Scott facing racism probe

Does "mlungu" really offend you? Do you know an amiable word for a white person in Zulu, Xhosa etc ?

What do racist blacks call whites? I know many words that can be used for blacks which causes unhappiness. Not one for whites. I wonder why?

So they said we were peeping toms!! :D

Lucky white people does not feel offended. My grandmother had an endearing term for me that is now totally political incorrect. :o. And I think that is why one poster said it was a word we grew up with that did not have a negative connection. Honestly. ( do not chop my head off )

But that said

It does not matter. I have come to the realization that some words are like talking about your GF's wobbles. She does not like it, even if it does not bother anybody else it’s her issue and you should not talk about it or look at it or anything. Respect the fact that she is sensitive about her wobbles.
IF you are going to use it your nookie card will be empty for months.

Baboon is another one. Some people just do not react well to it, so do not use it.

Also like a girl its volatile, some people take no offence and others blow up like a landmine. So rather avoid it.

I’m not making excuses for Mr Darren, I’m just saying that many of the terms that people find offensive was used it a total different way than they think it was.
But do not use it. It’s a ticking bomb.

you are moving off the subject here...Darren is guilty end of story.

if he was clever enough he could have blamed the previous apartheid regime :p

All of that seems like conjecture...without any meaningful substantiation. Bottom line is the people that use the word never use it in a negative or offensive manner. Unlike many other racial slurs that are never used in any other context except when people are angry and the main aim in to insult.

To be honest there aren't any racist words for whites in black languages. This is very strange considering that there are xenophobic words aimed at fellow Africans from up north.

Sorry?

Please tell the fellow forumites what "Mlungu" means...

(edit: nvm, see it's been covered already)

And please don't tell us about the context because K****r can also be used in other context not to be racist. Fact is, only whites can be racist. That is it, nothing more nothing less.

Yup that is true but judging by our past it makes sense hey. Shame poor darren, he made his bed though so the time has come to sleep in it.

Regardless if whites can only be racist you cannot go around racially abusing people, if you want to be racist do it in private so you don't lose two amazing jobs and end up begging for a living.

Silly fool that Daren Scott. Think thats the end of his career.

I realise it's not meant as an insult but imagine if a black guy was referred to as "black guy" by whites. Would he think that's ok? "Hey, black guy want a beer?". And can you think of any amiable slang words for black person in English? If it's slang it's considered derogatory. In fact can you think of any slang word denoting a race or ethnic group that's not considered a racial slur? Except of course umlungu.

Because, words are only deemed offensive when someone is offended by them. There was never necessarily anything derogatory meant by the k- n- or d- word, they were just sort of slang words for black people that black people got tired of because making reference to someones race every time you refer to them is actually degrading. Even negro is now considered offensive and it used to be the term american blacks preferred.

Nick i think we all know the K word is racist bud, ****** and negro those are all American words for black folk and through music they have lessened the effects of the word. No matter how you look at it this word was used badly. You don't call black people the k word no matter what. It is a terrible word considering our past and anyone stupid enough to use it deserves what mr scott has got.
