In a nutshell he is pushing the concept of self-determination and self-identity. Nothing wrong with that and it is a thought train spread throughout the world.

I sometimes liken South Africa to Yugoslavia. Yugoslavs and Yugoslavia did not exist. It was a ''nation'' created by forcing a bunch of differing cultures, languages, races (Albanians, Bosniaks of Islamic extraction, Slavs) & religions together and the end result was the First Balkan War (1912-1913), the Second Balkan War (1913), the catalyst for the First World War (1914 - 1918) and the Yugoslav Wars (1991-1999).

South Africa likes to push this idea of 11 ''national languages'', creating the idea of multi-nationalism, but it may also help create this idea of nationalism within each group. Sometimes I don't even believe there is such a thing as a South Africa, instead just a bunch of people that are very different from one another and are all guilty of wanting to be free of the others at some point. The ANC itself battles with ''tribalism'' within it's own ranks. Afrikaans and English speaking folks can still show hostility towards one other.

Belgium is another one. We have the Flemish Liberation Movement wanting autonomy of the region of Flanders. They don't want to be Belgian. Then we have the Walloon Movement, those that identify with France and want closer relations with France to the point that they have even pressed for intergration. Both have significant support within the country, although the Walloon presence has slid in recent decades while the Flemish movement is as strong as ever.

So a very old probably senile politician says some crazy stuff he is insulted and its headline news. But when Mandela appears at a Zuma rally wearing an ANC shirt showing support for Malema and Zuma. The excuses for Mandela's support at the rally is he was kidnapped. Or the other excuse he is a senile old man and didn't know what he was doing.

De Klerk as the minister of Education he wholeheartedly supported segregated universities.His stance was never a secret and disbanning of the ANC which led to the demise of Apartheid was basically a forced hand.

Why all the shock and awe.
 
From what I see on e-news those were his views growing up during the 80's?

Dr Yes he wasn't forced, he had plenty of opportunity to turn back, especially with pressure from within his own party.

Then there was Mandela's own tirade of abuse against FW during an address. Any other man in his position might very well have said enough while Mandela stood there mouthing off, but de Klerk sat there and let the process continue. Mandela could have blown it right there, and it was a perfect opportunity right there for de Klerk to back out, and not many would have blamed him, but he stayed the course.

I honestly don't see what the fuss is all about. All he was talking about was that when he was a youngster he believed that SA should have separate nations for the different races and that he came to realise that it didn't work in South Africa's case. He even admits Apartheid was wrong.
People really need to stop and think before the start create a fuss about nothing.

Exactly, had FW and his party not come to their senses the country WOULD have had an uhuru. We wouldn't be here discussing this, that's for sure.

There might have been an attempted uprising, but the army was ready for it and there would have been massive bloodshed on both sides.
Can't really which side would have won.

The NP realised this and graciously chose to hand over power (even against their better judgment).... they held a referendum and the majority of Whites agreed (maybe also against their better judgment). But there it is. They chose to end Apartheid.... come what may.

No, I was one of those that voted to end it.
It is true they were backed into a corner. It was time to end it. There was no other choice. The other option was no longer an option.
But however you look at it... FW was the one who was sailing the ship at that point in time.
So he is the one who gets the accolades.
And he did a pretty good job of it.
Hence the world recognising what he did (along with Mandela).

Do you want some "?????" to get a heart attack? They believe they "won" the revolution not that the whites decided as a majority and agreed to a new dispensation. But many idiots will not see it in that way :D
