I recently bought an Asus RT-AC58U Wifi router as a replacement for a D-Link router that died. They seem pretty much the same with configurable settings and default setup. I have a fibre line with Vumatel and ISP with Afrihost.

Ever since the upgrade I have been getting DNS errors, ranging from DNS_PROBE_START to NXCONFIG etc. This happens on wireless and wired connectivity.

I've tried setting Google's and Clouflare's DNS on the router's WAN settings, unfortunately to no luck. It's not that I don't have internet, but seems like it's also only Windows devices, and mainly with Chrome that I encounter these DNS issues. I have reset the router about 4 time just leading to frustration by having to reconnect all wifi devices again. I even did a walk-through with Afrihost's support, and no luck.

I don't believe it's a network connection strength issue since my devices are not further than 4m from the router, without any interference.

My only guess to the problem is that there's something on the new router that does not communicate well with the ISP, or the device itself is faulty. However, Asus has all these FAQ troubleshooting methods on DNS issues which make me think it's a common Asus "issue", or that they have amazing support docs.

I'm awaiting the retailer's response to whether I can take it back as possibly being faulty, but I still want to know if it could be anything that I'm missing. Maybe someone has encountered this and it's something small.
