I though I was "safe" with Avast - admittedly all values set to default...like I presume most run it?

I had AVG before and un-installed it i favour of Avast a while ago...Today I could not access the internet...set Avast to high sensitivity for everything and did a scan - squeeky clean it announces...Ok so let's see what HiJackThis says...
Hmm, some suspect exe's in my run key...ok removed them...Ah some internet connectivity returns...re-install AVG, update and scan...and some lovely nasty exe virusses surfaces

So now my paranoia persists  OTHER than Avast...any other good ones? or should I again run a buffet of firewalls and AV's :D like I did before...

I think I'm in the same boat as you. My avast says my PC is clean as a whistle. It doesn't even pick up win-32 virus when I insert a flash drive. But then again, it doesn't even see them (as visible or hidden files).

I think today I'm going to try HiJackThis.

No antivirus picks up 100% of the viruses. Even Nod32 has let me down from time to time.

And I can agree to that...but to be honest since I had AVG I also did not have any viruses slip by - at least not the pc crippling kind - or the kind I became aware of :D - and the missing money from by bank account is just my wife ;) - can't blame AVG for that now, can I

By no means am I an advocate for AVG either - just trying to get a feel of what the other members are using...or even a just a hit/fail ratio
