Bad Latency on MWEB 4mb uncapped

Hi All,

For those still experiencing out of the ordinary local latency, please keep posting traceroutes (to mybroadband.co.za) also indicating the region or suburb you're in. If you get a chance also try to sabela.saix.net (server sits on the other side of our peer links) e.g.

I know my latency is in acceptable ranges, but i was wondering why there is a jump to double the latency between step 4 and 5, and step 6 and 7 on my tracert. is this normal? Judging from the one posted here by MWEB it seems that his connection is far more stable. here is my tracert.

Gee, I thought my 60-90ms was bad, 150-250ms on local sites is terrrible!

And you are only 25km away from me. Something very weird, with all the South Peninsula (& SsW) posts in this thread.

Look, things are definitely better than they were last week, hop five is looking concerning though. I still would like to know how my traffic gets router in the eastern cape...

Grahamstown (046 622...) -->PE -->CT-->JHB or Grahamstown (046 622...) -->PE -->JHB? The trace route doesn't give enough info. Also, any idea whats occurring at hop 2? Its always done that, router perhaps?

I am starting to think that hops 4 & 5 (internal to MWeb) aren't relevant, as long as the overall ping time is consistent. 30-50ms seems to be tolerable (though not ideal). As soon as ping times go over 60-90ms, there is a problem or congestion...

Traffic from Grahamstown to Jhb goes via whatever route Telkom feels like! It only becomes part of the MWeb nework (hop 2 or 3).

Hop 2 is in your local exchange. Maybe it has turned off ping responses to avoid DoS attacks from Rhodes University students ;-)

See the description of ESR and IPC routing by the MWeb representative:
http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthr...ers-Feedback&p=3878092&viewfull=1#post3878092

Thanks for that info Gordon. Definitely much better than last week for sure! Ping Test gives me an A, so I'm going to leave this ship and constructively criticize elsewhere. RU students playing silly buggers... never!

Here's a brain-teaser for you. If I run a tracert to the 2nd hop on my routing (local exchange), it first goes via Jhb, before coming back to Clareinch, Cape Town!

Code:

I think part of the answer is that the IP address 41.132.48.1 is assigned by MWeb, and the Telkom exchange/DSLAM forwards ALL packets to MWeb, regardless of their destination. Once the packet gets to Jhb, it is then routed back to Cape Town...

P.S. This is not just frivolous, it is also an independent test of MWeb's network, and cogestion on Telkom's network and IPC. The ping times I get (28-30ms) are very similar to those for local websites (CT-Jhb).

Wow, you really have it bad! Are you sure there aren't any other tasks running in the background? Otherewise you have really awful copper, or a crappy and/or congested exchange. I'd be interested to see what the MWeb rep has to say about your case...

Glad my test was of some relevance (cutting out the extra hops), although testing to sabela.saix.net gives very similar overall results for me, as does your previous post:
http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthr...4mb-uncapped&p=3890722&viewfull=1#post3890722

When I ping that IP address it is under 30ms, but you probably don't need to hear that....
