Best internet options for PC gamers?

So I recently built my first (gaming dedicated) PC after mostly playing games on consoles the last generation and one of the primary reasons being the cheaper prices of games on steam etc.

Up to know I've mostly played, and downloaded, older games that require smaller downloads, but over the weekend I bought GTA V when it was on sale, and Witcher is sitting in my cart as we speak. Problem is I have little hope of playing it anytime soon as I have a 50 GB cap on my internet plan.

So I was wondering what other PC gamers do with regards to these massive downloads of modern games, especially with the current ADSL and broadband climate in SA. What internet packages do you have? Do you use other workarounds like getting the game file from a buddy etc.

I hope this is a topical conversation that hasn't been beaten to death (couldn't find anything related so far)

10Mbps Uncapped ADSL. Generally queue games for the night, and let them download at night.

You need a wired connection: ADSL or Fibre. Fibre is cheaper but not available everywhere yet. Also get an uncapped account. Caps are dumb.

Crystalweb is the best ISP around too currently

How do I get fiber in my area? Is there a petition?

Something like this is also fine: Cybersmart 100gb+1000gb + 2mbps line at R319.

You can download overnight on the odd months where you get close to the cap.

Wouldn't trust the contention on uncapped accounts.

This made me laugh

Only on Fibre is it viable to have an uncapped account as everything unshaped uncapped on ADSL costs R700+ per month. A cheap 100gig account with uncapped from 12pm-6am will easily suit the needs of OP and have the same quality Internet as the R700+ package.

Just set steam to download between 12pm-6am and you can get away with under R200 for good I-net.

I'm on a 300gig capped account from Axxess and download 600-700gigs a month, I have never been throttled or shouted at, every time I have checked my line is running at 90+ percent of what it is capable of (including torrents). Try doing that on most uncapped accounts without getting throttled to 25kb/s.

The only 4 ISP's worth going to on ADSL are Afrihost (but only in JHB), Axxess, CW and Vox.

Also I wouldn't go with CW on Fibre as they are often getting DDosed and had a major leak of e-mails the other day. No ISP is perfect

How much do you pay for this package?

So then why not a premium uncapped account from Axxess? It's cheaper and it isn't throttled.

I'm on a 10mbps line

I used axxess uncapped before there was premium/home and it was throttled to hell especially on torrents where download speed were max 400-500kbps. Changed to capped torrent dl"s 900+kbps, streaming 1080p with a secondary stream at 720p no problems. On uncapped I was lucky to get one stream 1080p.

I did a test back then leaving torrents running 24/7 when I wasn't streaming or gaming for a month. The max I pulled was 400gigs to put it in perspective.

The Axxess uncapped products aren't shaped they are throttled on certain protocols like torrents or streaming from kodi. So you may get decent speeds on steam but not on other things I find important. Capped accounts let you do as you please on any protocols which make them a better option in my opinion and with uncapped 12pm-6am you can use the same if not more then on uncapped.

You can read Axxess AUP where it will explain that all to you.

Wow, witcher 3 goty R500 on steam. That's cheaper than what I payed for the stand alone, albeit on release.
That much quality content at that price.
