Beware Webafrica capped plans ripoff

But I guess there is a cost to making it clear, and it is much more profitable to keep it fuzzy.

I think you have hit the nail on the head.

The fact that there are so many opinions on what is a month etc etc jut show that WA have not made it clear and good customer service would see them do this.

Many years ago I was with openweb (if memory serves me correct) and I joined at some stage during the month and both my cap and the cost was pro rata so this is quite doable.

How is it even fuzzy?

When you sign up they tell you that you are going to pay RX for X amount of GB's per month. Then they ask you if you want to start this month or next month. That immediately tells me what I am buying and for which month I am buying it.

They can't make it any clearer than that.

And if they should pay him back pro-rata as the OP indicates he wants, what will they base that on? The days he was a member or the amount of data he used?

What that might immediately tell you is not the point. The point is that a significant number of people, especially those new to ADSL like the OP, will not get that message. Because it is fuzzy and not clear.

They can't make it any clearer than that.

Of course they can make it clearer than that. How about "This 120GB data purchase expires on 31 October 2014 (3 days time)"? There are any number of ways to make it clearer. And for someone purchasing on the last few days of a month, a nice big fat warning wouldn't go amiss.

Must they also explain to you that you must have a ADSL phone line to use this product? The problem with society is that everyone expects to be spoonfed. BUT I am sure that WA will include something along those lines soon.

And how is this a rip-off as the OP states in his Thread Title? "Beware Webafrica capped plans ripoff"

Off topic: I don't want to argue with Gatecrasher as he saved me a lot of money with traffic splitting. :) http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthr...ational-and-local-traffic-on-a-Linksys-WRT54G
( I still have the thread bookmarked)

:) Off topic: I've been thinking of running that script again on my Linksys. Not for international/local splitting, but for switching default routes between a vanilla capped account and a cheap Telkom account with limitless night surfer.

that script was the bomb. crazy to think it may still have a place albeit in a different manner.

How is it even fuzzy?

that's because it is

When you sign up they tell you that you are going to pay RX for X amount of GB's per month.

there are services that i can buy which run say from the 7th to the 7th. i still pay x amount per month

Then they ask you if you want to start this month or next month. That immediately tells me what I am buying and for which month I am buying it.

this could make me think they are happy to bill me in arrears. i might think that's strange but shrug my shoulders and continue.

They can't make it any clearer than that.

they can as evidenced by Gatecrasher above

And if they should pay him back pro-rata as the OP indicates he wants, what will they base that on? The days he was a member or the amount of data he used?

pro-rate the data. there are isps that do this.

So if you don't use all your data by the end of the month you must get a refund? Show me that ISP.

Your last sentence.

So if he signed up on the second of the month and did not use all his data then he should get paid back the data he did not use?

He means, given a month with 30 days and a signup on the 2nd, a new client should be offered 29/30 of the data at be charged 29/30 of the price.

Ah, okay, but I am sure you will get someone who complains about that too.

I still think that the OP is wrong and that his thread headline is totally overboard. "Beware Webafrica capped plans ripoff"

In terms of your first point I would have thought a pro rata system with capped is fair, but guess if you want to use a month's supply in a few days, then that person would complain - guess one will never please everyone (as this thread has shown)

Agree re his topic been rather misleading. I do understand his frustrations with the charge and think on that front he has a valid concern but the capped plans certainly aren't a ripoff. I guess we have learnt too much from a press who likes to give headlines that sell :)

I also just encountered this policy when wanting to sign up for a Capped Business package, but paused on activate this subscription now when I realised its not charged pro-rata. I'm not going to be able to use the full allocation of data so Web Africa are welcome to wait until next month for my business.

I have to agree that Afrihost's signup and customer management portal is vastly superior. Pity I have had so much issues with slow speeds and DNS issues and the speeds were great on the WA test account.

As an alternative could I sign for up for a smaller capped package and have it changed from the 2nd month onwards?

Just a warning to all you out there planning to switch to webafrica for a capped plan.

No matter what time in the month you sign up for they will charge you for a full calender month. No pro-rate, no reduced data... nothing.

I signed up on the 27th of last month for a 120GB plan and probably used about 5-10 GB. I saw today that they charged me a full months payment for those three days.44I phoned them and I was told that they do not do pro-rata on capped accounts because "you get the full amount of data from the day you signed up".

I feel that this is totally unfair and not something that is made clear when signing up. I paid for 120GB over one month, not 120GB over 3 days.

I have tried to resolve this in private with them on the phone but so far only empty promises to call back later, further it is not possible to talk to anyone higher then telephone support in the chain.

Not a good way to start a business relationship Webafrica!!!!!!

Its a capped account. You can use that all in a few days if you want. They were right to charge you full rate and you were silly to complain about it. Did you not research and check their billing terms before you started?

Upgrades are immediate so you should be able to do that.

Hi kamikazi,

Glad to hear you joining us :D

You can definitely choose a smaller package then just upgrade it later. Like Chevron posted upgrades are immediate ;)
