I recently started getting a sudden black screen when playing BF3.This never happened before when playing the game(past 6 months).I updated drivers and even cleaned the GPU but still nothing. My idle temp on my HD6850 is 37C and I noticed the problem also happens when using MSI kombustor. The black screen which is sometimes white or grey appears when my GPU hits around 60C.That was always my temps even when playing BF3 for hours prior to the recent problem.Could the GPU temps displayed be wrong?
PC specs:
Q8200 2.33GHz
2*2 gigs 800MHz
Vantec ion 520W
Coolermaster Hyper 212 Evo
Biostar Tpower i45
2*500gig Seagate
Club 3D HD6850
Win 7 ultimate 64-bit

A few minutes ago it happened again but this time with a blue screen and just by opening a folder.I don't know whether to laugh or cry.I'm starting to think it's not a graphics problem?

I am having a similar problem with sometimes dark drey when playing videos, light grey or blue screens with vertical lines. System freezes with a buzzing sound coming through the speakers. Card is a Sapphire Radeon HD 7750 (standard 800 MHz edition) which is just a few weeks old. I changed power settings to not go into standby or switch off monitor. Also disabled link-state management. Have you tried this?

All this seemed to do is delay the time beween crashes. Didn't have this problem when I was using the onboard VGA to play videos.

Sapphire Radeon HD 7750
catalyst 12.8 installed
windows 7 32 bit

Could I have a faulty card? Or could there be a setting that is incorrect?

Test everything, one at a time
First do RAM with memtest (its a bootable, so its just your PCU and RAM working). Or you can run intelburntest in Windows to test your ram (set it to max RAM usage in the test).
Once those two are done and you have no issues, try furmark for 5min. If something is horribly wrong with your GPU you should crash very quickly with furmark.
After those two its gets more tricky

I agree but I'd say firstly stress test GPU before anything else, then ram. 70% it's GPU though.

I never try any of the above except a msi kombustor burn in test to see what temp the problem is happening at.I will try the above methods but just to rule out the ram.It can't be the cpu because gaming for hours i used to get temps of 55C max.

I have the same setup as you, never had a black screen yet though...or a blue screen when opening a folder.

Does your card has ram sinks? are the GPU rams cooled sufficiently?

I think GPU tool also shows the memory temps, monitor that also since artifacts could be caused by failing ram connections.

Did you install any updates or software prior to the black screens? Could also be a virus

60 degrees is not hot at all...mine reaches 73 degrees on furmark stress tests

No I'm not using wireless and there was no software changes before the problem.

Either your ram or gpu i had the same problem with my gtx460. i think the strain that game puts on causes your ram to become "overloaded".

Now that I think of it my card does make a buzzing sound which started around the time I started having the black screen.Although it happens only on start up.

Also by the way I play multiplayer.

Try this...when in your browser and you join a server, the block that pops up showing info and that stuff. When it says loading level press the Battlefield 3 icon in your task bar. Report back to us ASAP

Same thing as soon as I deploy and run around a bit black screen and sound cuts off a few seconds later.

Would you mind me teamviewing your pc to find the problem?
