Blackberry 8520 on Contract

I just seen a Vodashop ad in one of the papers and it said nothing about free BIS. So it's possible that different outlets don't have the same special.

Turns out the BIS is free and the guy at the vodacom store whp my friend dealt with didnt know that BIS was included lol. Everything is sorted now. This contract has to be the best deal out right now!

Thanks for coming back to tell us! This is an excellent deal...I will see if MTN hassles me with my upgrade (they might because I have a promo-fee) and if they do, I will even change numbers and move to vodacom!

Still no news on any MTNSP deals? I didn't get time to check at any store, but there's nothing on the MTN Direct website. Did anyone check at any MTN stores?

wonder if this might help

wonder if this might help

Thanks for the link, it's exactly what I was looking for, and really is a big help.

MTN's Anytime 100 package is craaaazy, R219 for R100 airtime, that's R119 extra every month. Vodacom's Weekender deal for R149 is only R14 extra every month.

Well, for once Vodacom are offering a better package than MTN. I was looking to move over to Vodacom, and now MTN just gave me a good reason to do so. (Not exactly moving over, I'll be taking out a new contract and will probably still keep my MTN contract. Overall, MTNSP generally have better deals than Vodacom. But I want a Blackberry!!!)

This is probably one the best deals on the VC Weekend Plus package, normally subscription is R135 and BIS is R69.

At R149 it really means that your subscription is now R80 per month for your free 120 off peak minutes plus BIS at R69

Another perspective is that your subscription is still R135 pm and your BIS costs R14 :D

All of this for a spanking Brand New Blackberry phone featuring the new trackpad.

All I really wanted was the ability to get my emails directly to the phone, the rest of the feature set is a bonus for me.

I do not feel disappointed at all in making this choice.

My expectations have certainly been met, however just as a side note, I also have another phone for business use which has a lot more bells and whistles, like GPS, the Nokia 5800.

Ok my fiance just got the 8520 on the R149 a month Vodacom contract yesterday. Yes its a low price to pay but DAMN Vodacom's BIS is suuuuuuper slow. 2 days in a row now the speed has been around dial up speed or slower. She has downloaded (well tried to) download a few mp3s and has not seen over 5KB/s. Sometimes it sits at 2KB/s for 20 mins then hangs.

This seems to be a common issue with Vodacom's BIS. There are also many complaints about it on here. I am using BIS through MTN and yes sometimes its slow but never this bad. I sometimes get over 100KB/s download speeds and stream audio at 128k without hiccups. But anyway, R149 is still a damn good price and the 8520 is actually a great phone for entry level.

My missus signed up for the same deal yesterday. Seems pretty good to me. The trackpad sounds like a bonus as the trackballs are prone to fouling.

I just did a speed test and the network seems pretty responsive but we'll see how it fares tomorrow during prime time.

The trackpad is a great change and it works well once you're used to it. Wish I had one on my Bold.

Here's my MTN BIS speedtest I just did:

Avg. Download Speed: 294.32Kbits/s
Max. Download Speed: 383.09Kbits/s

Avg. Upload Speed: 42.95Kbits/s
Max. Upload Speed: 75.52Kbits/s

And on the Vodacom 8520's BIS:

Avg. Download Speed: 15.75Kbits/s. EISH!!!
Max. Download Speed: 42.0Kbits/s

Avg. Upload Speed: 11.31Kbits/s EISH!!!
Max. Upload Speed: 27.65Kbits/s

Was your MTN BIS test via your Bold or the 8520?

My Curve:

Avg. Download Speed: 42.03Kbits/s
Max. Download Speed: 64.62Kbits/s

Avg. Upload Speed: 21.02Kbits/s
Max. Upload Speed: 39.68Kbits/s

That was on my Bold. Just did another test now and its even faster than earlier. I feel for you :-) That's just not on.

The Bold, being 3G, is supposed to be faster than a curve's EDGE connection.

Sure, but you are hardly getting a bareable EDGE speed. Is that MTN?
No - Vodacom and this definitely isn't nearly as bad as it was a month or two ago.

EDIT - Updated the app, restarted and did another test:

Connection Type: Carrier
Avg. Download Speed: 104.52Kbits/s
Max. Download Speed: 104.52Kbits/s

Avg. Upload Speed: 18.37Kbits/s
Max. Upload Speed: 39.68Kbits/s
