I came across this deal for the blackberry 8520 for free on a weekender package. It looks good, considering that it includes the BIS subscription. Does anyone know if MTN have a similar deal for this phone, maybe a Anytime 100 or 200?

Check it out here

I did hear something about MTN planning on introducing a new BB on the low end packages soon. Will ask my girlfriend if she knows more (she's the manager at an MTN franchise store).

A contract on bidorbuy? Looks a bit dodgy.

I don't think it's dodgy. Besides, the seller is reputable and has good ratings.

The only thing I'm worried about is using Edge on the Vodacom network. I understand that Vodacom's Edge coverage is not as good as their 3G coverage, but I could be wrong.

Thanks. Keep us posted in this thread.

Yip decent phone, verrrry decent price!:)

I think the main drawcard for me is the BIS service, which according to the seller on BOB, is included in the monthly subscription. (If I had the money I would go for the Bold). But at this price it's a very decent phone.

This has already been flighted on TV ads ...

Also available direct from Vodacomdirect first on the list at the top.

Note: No GPS, No 3G, this is a base entry level Blackberry designed to get new or even Pre-paid market into the Blackberry concept.

Once in, the desire for better means an upgrade as you already familiar with the brand and what it offers _BIS_

Features a track pad instead of a track ball ala Omnia track pad :D

Track ball had become a reliability issue for BB, so try a new concept via the masses.

Budget "Smartphone" for the masses ;)

I see the price on the Bidorbuy ad was changed from R135 to R149. I suppose it was an error the first time round, because the subscription on the Vodacomdirect site is also R149. The BIS subscription alone is worth R69, so it's not a bad deal at all.

does any1 have actual stock yet?

Yip Vodashops should have...

Yip, R135 for the weekender subs and the only R14 for BIS!!!!
Cheap cheap!:p

Its basically a 8900 without GPS...

low/normal rez...QVGA screen...

A lot of people will compare it to the 8900 and 9000. But remember this is an entry level phone, and I think it's just what's needed to get Blackberry to the masses.

If you look at it, you'd normally pay R69 for BIS. Here it's included at R149. So the subscription is basically R R80 / month. Compared to other phones available on a Weekender at this subscription, this is a good deal.

BTW I came a across this at the Nashuamobile site.

R189 on MTN Anytime 100 is steep, especially since you have to still pay R239 for sim and connection (free on the Vodacom deal). Nashuamobile are normally a bit more expensive than MTNSP, so let's wait and see what they can come up with (hope they don't take ages).

BIS is not included in the R149 a month! I repeat NOT INCLUDED! Deceptive advertising. A friend of mine got one of these contracts last week and after having problems with the internet phoned the store who told him he needs to pay extra for the BIS. He was pissed off because he had asked if everything was included before signing the contract and they said yes. They then said "Hey, its only R2 per day" to try and cover up the lie. Be careful!

Another friend was going to get this contract but after reading about Vodacom's terribly slow BIS decided against it.

You say your friend phoned the store. Which store or outlet did he get it from. Maybe they had a different deal, or he got it before this deal came out. Anyone else get this phone on contract?
