BlackBerry vs Google Android vs Apple IOS

Data bundles are still way too expensive I cannot blame people for turning to Blackberry.

That's true, but overall Blackberrys are crap phones. I'm on prepaid and I tried using the facebook book app, a message prompt popped stating that I have to contact my service operator.

RIP RIM

The phone market in SA has a 2 year tail, so shifts in the market take a while to reflect in this statistic. Far more interesting would be the number of registrations on a monthly basis.

The growth of iOS is limited by how much stock Vodacom bring into the country - I have not been into a single Vodacom shop that has iPhones in stock! I don't know why this is, but I would love to know how much Vodacom subsidises the iPhone vs the Galaxy SII.

Who thinks up these headlines? This isn't remotely surprising. It's logical that Android would overtake iOS with so many more phones running Android being available on the market. Not to mention the fact that there are Android devices available to suit a range of pockets, whereas that isn't the case with iOS.

Not necessarily, cheaper does not always equal volume. There are cheaper Android handsets on the market, sub R1000.

About the car analogy, Cherry QQ is cheaper but its not outselling Toyota Hilux, same-thing for Tata Telcoline. :p

You're comparing apples (ironically) and oranges. The Chery QQ and the Toyota Hilux are two completely different vehicles built for different purposes.

How do you even use 3GB on your phone in a month?! (Remember BIS does not cover any data when using your phone as a modem)

Thats easy.

Using Daily Apps
Downloading Apps
Browsing
Downloading MP3's
Internet Radio Streaming

I use close on 3GB / month.

Only one problem, I see cheap Android Phones (Using the car analogy) like a SUV with a 600cc motor.

Sure it looks like a car and on paper it ticks all the needs but in reality it sucks to try and do anything with it.

I had a HTC Wildfire 1st gen for about 3 months, used for development testing and I can say if I was an end user I would much rather buy a BB at the same price range that that piece of crap.

What I do find odd is that in SA we seem to only stock the latest phones so you can not really get a quality phone at an affordable price. Like in the US where you can get HTC Deisre HD now for free on low end contracts or again using the US example you can still get old iPhone 3's and older 4' on new contracts.

About five months ago my daughter moved up from a BlackBerry to a Samsung Galaxy S because of the Android coolness factor. Her dad has the S2 and she wanted the same. This past weekend she begged me to get her a BlackBerry again. She's done the Android thing and is bored with it and now want to go back to BlackBerry BBM to do the stuff she actually needs. My other daughter said she will never move away from BlackBerry.

RIM do have serious problems but the teenagers love their BlackBerrys. That's for sure. Most don't look at phones the way we geeks do. Most people want the simplicity and cheap social interaction strengths of the BlackBerry.

Agreed, 1st thing I would do as CEO is focus on the strong and forget the weak.
Focus on BBM and make it available for other platforms for a fee. Keep it free on your phones, ...

How's this going to help, when there are so many ways to use free messaging on other platforms ?

For e.g.
http://explore.live.com/messenger-mobile
Never miss an IM ; Chat with your Messenger friends across virtually any device

WhatsApp also seems to be renewing for up to an extra year, for free :
Whatsap service extended
http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/397211-Whatsap-service-extended
So I got an extra 8 months.

Let me guess you never used a BBM?

Hell dont take my word for it, just ask the people if they are willing to pay for BB on other phones. Also what you can do to spice it up is make your app use your BIS network to fall under that agreement.

IE: build on what you have now, while you still have it in place.

My migration in cell technology was ... Siemens -> Nokia -> BlackBerry -> iPhone -> Android. I am now on my second Android phone (Galaxy S2 -> Galaxy Note) and can without any doubt state that Android beats the others hands down as far as phones go. On tablets my iPad 2 is still king (but Android is catching up fast).

Most interesting figures, not revealed in the article, are the growth percentages... It seems BB is finally slowing down in SA as well, with less than 20% growth compared to Apple's 24.5% and Android's 32.7%.

I suspect we will be seeing a further decline in 2012 for BB, as I honestly don't think a new OS is going to save their skin. But hat remains to be seen!

Its slowing because its reaching critical mass.(In SA) Also you are looking at growth in terms of their current market share, hence IOS and Droid are going to be growing more. IF you look at the raw numbers you can see their growth is not even close.

A lot of those BB users will never have an iPhone or Android phone, the BB market and to extent the Android market cover a lot more users then the iPhone ever will. The main reason is that Apple wont release a cheap phone.

A more interesting graphic will show the number of Bolds/Torches vs iPhones vs Samsungs.

@Elimentals - the ''argument'' is more about saving a Co. in freefall & making major changes in order to do so. If people have alternatives which work for them, they're unlikely to pay en-masse for BBM.

I have a Zenithink ZT-280 Cortex A9 running Ice Cream Sandwich - or Android 4.0.3 and I must say that it is one awesome operating system. I cannot see Apple or RIM competing with it in 2012.

They used the best of Honeycomb and Gingerbread to create it and it rocks.

Too bad I cannot hold onto it though.

I would hardly call a blackberry curve a smartphone....but yeah...
once the Vodacom launches that priceplan for apple and android BB will totally loose market share.

I still have my wildfire with a custom rom on it. Andoid Os 2.3 (xda-developers) and it runs super fast. on a side note, I decided to get the R50 a month contract from mtn for my daughter, but I took the htc chacha phone for myself, its a very fast and responsive phone for the price compared to the sub R100 + packages you get for BB. I would even go as far to say its as fast or faster than a BB9900. I dont know, R50 a month for a Android 2.3 device vs a R429 a month for a BB9900, its a huge difference in price, and for the extra money you can throw a nice data bundle on that chacha.

I think you are confused.

A lot of BB's are slow and crap... not the 9900

While the resident Android fanboi clearly had fun in making the graphic for this article, it's sobering to think that Apple is holding its own with basically a single handset (iPhone) against a myriad of manufacturers pumping out Android devices.

But it's still a cool graphic. :D

Jannie...please wipe that foam from your mouth...and your eyes rolling into the back of your head like that is extremely unsettling...please dont do that!

:p
