Stay less than 2km from my closest wi-fi spot, never used wi-fi before don't have any wi-fi equipment.......it would be appreciated if you guys can assist/help me as to what I require to connect to the wi-fi spot, only have the CellC dongle and my 8ta sim card (with 10GB to be used on wi-fi)

Thanks in advance.

Go to the closest wifi spot physically. Wifi has a range of about 30m only. No other way to connect. As to how you set it up, it seems very vague at this point, read what people have been saying. Most smartphones, laptops and tablets have wifi built in. But I think you need to use a device which has the 8ta sim in, like a phone or tablet

Looks like you can link your laptop's MAC address to a SIM:

How do I link a secondary MAC address to the Cellphone number that has been allocated Free Unlimited Wi-Fi Access?

* Log into the Self Service Portal at www.8ta.com/login and click on Link MAC address
* Enter your wireless MAC address
* And Click submit
* Only one wireless MAC address of the secondary device must be linked to the Free Unlimited Wi-Fi qualifying MSISDN

If you use a smartphone, it will be able to automatically connect using an EAP SIM, but you can't use your smartphone (with the 8ta SIM in it) and the linked MAC at the same time.

I'm on the I5 10gig package and got this message well.
I took my sim out of the dongle put into an old BB 8520 and headed off to the nearest wifi hotspot.
Scanned for TM connect and chose EAP-SIM.

Works like a bomb.Even managed a youtube video with no buffering.
I'm now going to be having very long coffee breaks at shopping centres.

:D

Paste: To add a second device:

Register on the 8ta self service portal.
Log in.
Bottom right ---> "wifi"

Apparantly this is where you specify the MAC address of the second device, but when I hover over it, it links to "JavaScript Void", so the button doesn't do anything when I log In. I have logged a fault with Telkom, who say that they are experiencing coutrywide problems, especially linking MAC addresses to an Internet5 Promo. When I find a workaround I will let you know.

All we need is the Wifi Button's URL. If anyone's button works, please share.

Also, EAP-SIM is not available on many unrooted Android devices due to security concerns over the protocol. Rooted devices have to edit config files on the phone to force the device to allow EAP-SIM, but I have been unable to do this successfully thus far. It seems like your best bet at this stage is to use an iPhone / Blackberry / PC & Dongle.

My understanding is that a text box appears there if your sim/contract is eligible to link a secondary device (not all contracts are eligible for this).
Quoting the 8ta site:
This option is only applicable to contract offers that have qualify for Free Unlimited Wi-Fi as a feature of the product.

My account indicates that on the Internet 5 Promo, I have 10gb of GPRS (i.e my Contract data), plus another 10gb of unused Wifi Data. But the TM guys say that they are working on the problem and will advise when they are able to link my MAC address for me.

Wifi hot spots are non-existent. This is total bull****. Wi-fi should be pervasive - all of all should be covered with a huge wi-fi hot spot, not little bits here and there. this is unuseable.

This only applies to smartphones. There is no way one can setup the EAP-SIM feature on a modem. :(

Well I actually tried this today at a Maxi's.

I managed to download quite a few files.

My signal was a bit low but I will most certainly use this again.

I know there is a hotspot at McDonalds at Kolonade as well.

Will do a speed test and post the results the next time.
