can anyone suggest freeware that I can boot to format my HDD

Pc is sick and needs it

Most operating systems these days (going back to Windows XP) have their own partition and format utility.
What are you planning on installing?
 
Going back to xp. It won't boot tho sadly

You should be able to boot off the original XP disk or any recovery disks that were created. Just make sure that your boot order in the BIOS is set to boot to CD first.

This ^ ... you have to set your CD to bot first in the BIOS... then follow these instructions....

I have done all this but it gives me an error - I just need a utility i can boot from a CD and format the drive and then try load WINXP

The usual ways arent working sadly
