Cell C blames Vodacom for network problems

When I went to Limpopo, I was greeted with EDGE all over the place. Even when there was a Voda tower close nearby.

8ta over MTN fared better. I'm considering switching over to 8ta.

You and me both. I have around R30 airtime waiting to be used then porting. I really don't want to.

Knott-Craig explained that their roaming agreement with Vodacom is still valid for a few more years and that terminating it isn’t an option as they would need to “block up holes” in their network before they switch off Vodacom roaming in an area.

There must be a big hole between Midrand and Linden.

Does this explain the no data even on full 3g signal though or is this about another problem? My phone never roamed on Vodacom unless I forced it to .....cause the signal never dropped low enough for it to switch in the areas I move around in .. but data was dead most of the time or extremely slow. I dont understand how this is Vodacom's fault. Even though Cell C has a 3G roaming agreement in place ... I dont think this is actually put to use in practice.....so 3G connections are all on Cell C's own network as far as I know? Has this changed?

Rarely have problems- but then again I'm rarely in areas that suffer major congestion.

Not a bad choice at all. I did so last year May when they were running specials. Very happy with the 8ta/TelkomMobile network. In fact, when I am in a 8ta tower area, I never have any problems, good signal, good internet performance on my cellphone, quality voice calls ect. For me the handover between 8ta/mtn wasn't always smooth, but then again I came from the MTN network where I didn't really have problems with them. My problems were all with Autopage.

More than a year later still on 8ta, still happy. I use my phone mostly in Cape Town CBD and Tygervalley area, if that matters. When visiting the parents in Pretoria I didn't have problems either as far as I remember.

I have very little sympathy for Cell C. They have had more than a decade to build their network.

Instead of attacking Vodacom they should rather take a few pages of history from them. When it comes to building proper networks no one can compete with Vodacom. It took Racal more than a year to build their Vodafone network in the UK and despite them being much smaller than BT they still crushed BT when it came to launch time because they did proper site and cell analysis and did not just piggyback on what they already had - because they had nothing.

Long story short, build your own network and learn a thing or two in the process.

The Telkom Mobile (ex 8ta) network is much better than the Vodacom network in terms of hardware and set up.

I really do believe what Cell C is saying is being misinterpreted.

They are not blaming the Vodacom network quality, they are merely stating that the handover isn't taking place the way it should and this is due to Vodacom in some way or another.

I believe the 97% coverage includes the roaming agreement.. but I cannot be entirely certain.

I think the bottom line is, that if CellC has a commercial agreement with Vodacom to provide coverage in certain areas and Vodacom does not meet the SLA's and performance standards of the contract, then CellC should be able to introduce penalties. We would you need to build your own network if you can leverage off other providers.

Just not good form of AKC to come out blaming someone else for his company problems. Must however be quite funny when all his "beloved" ex-VC colleagues now give him the finger.

First response in 9 months and they blame Vodacom:D
What happened to that $180 Million investment/bail out for network improvements last year?
Another $350 million recently, build your own network, that is if you have a network.

When in Victoria Bay, George, no signal from CellC in iPad. Use Vodacom and I have signal???

Vodacom remind me of SANRAL, ESKOM etc - big brother!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cell C have not implemented 3G roaming on Vodacom as far as I know. Roaming on 2G on Vodacom works fine. I have frequently forced my phone onto Vodacom roaming before porting my number back to Vodacom last week.

All the people here complaining about CellC. Do us all a favor and port :D
