Cell C launches 3GB/year data offering

Hey guys, just to confirm - you can take this out as a brand new 3GB SIM (a prepaid one for R399) OR top-up with a 3GB voucher for R399 on your existing prepaid or top-up (hybrid) contract. In both cases the data has a validity period of 365 days.

Someone said that this deal isn't available as a voucher - that is not true at all.
 
This is great for engineering applications which communicate small amounts of data from remote sites. Opens up a whole bunch of opportunities.
 
Amazing how many are applauding this. Seems like quite a rip off. For R999 for the year u could get 2GB PER MONTH from CellC (sim card only deal)... surely even low usage users are better off spending R50 extra a month (for 2gb per month deal) in case a windows update goes AWOL.

R50 extra per month is R600 over the year, a lot if you are never going to use that data.

It is a very good deal:

Vodacom 3GB Broadband Standard bundle - R520 - valid for (up to) 60 days
Cell-C 3GB/365 bundle - R399 - valid for 365 days

Thats just the thing, this isn't targeted at those who plan to use it as a primary/secondary internet connection for their computers. this is tailor made for smartphones/tablets.

If you plan on using the data for the computer (implying you'll use the allotted data every month), by all means go for the R999 deal. Data solely for your small form factor communications device, this is it. 256mb is just about enough for a smartphone.

Besides, swapping sims between speedstick and cellphone (+ the added headache if other people use the same connection), then considering if you may make/receive calls when the sim's in the cellphone... a bit too much effort for my liking.
 
I have a question, SIM only is R399 for the 3GB deal, R999 for the 2GB per month. With modem, it's R749 and R1499 respectively. Thus, the modem prices are R350 and R500. Is it the exact same modem? The website does not say UMTS 900 on the 3GB deal.. Surely it is the same white speed stick?

To be honest, that was a mistake. It is true. I realize now that I should have just gone with Cell C’s modem together with the data bundle – the R749 modem plus 3GB would have been perfect.

I bought this modem just last month. When I bought it, I did not realize that it is not compatible with WOOSH (i.e. it doesn't operate on 900Mhz).

I must say the guys who sold me the modem hoodwinked me. I will not mention their name because I refuse to be sour about it - it was my fault anyway even though they were not completely honest with me. They told me that it is compatible with Cell C and the other operators but they did not tell me that it is only compatible with Cell C on GPRS and EDGE, a point that I feel should have been made clear to me and which should be made clear to everyone else who intends buying this modem.

So, in essence, I am simply trying to make lemonade.

Besides, when I used my R5.00 on the modem with the other operator who is on 2100Mhz, it took me just a minute to finish the R5.00, with the speed it had – it is a 7.2mbps modem.

So, edge with 3GB for 1 year might actually not be a bad idea. I will wait patiently either for Cell C to also start using 2100Mhz or for the other operators to drop their oob prices or just continue using it with Cell C on EDGE/GPRS. I still haven’t finished my Cell C 250MB for R100 (i.e. R0.40/mb) bundle from last month. The EDGE/GPRS speeds are around 250kbps so it is not too bad.

Another thing that would make the 3GB offer really great is that I do not have to move the sim from my modem to my phone everytime to load a new data bundle since I would be using 3GB on EDGE/GPRS. The process sux. I run the risk of breaking something on my phone if not on the modem.

I wish the operators could just offer bundles via Internet banking too so that we can recharge the sim in the modem without taking it out.

P.S. The Victory 301USB modem is on 2100Mhz and 850 and doesn't support WOOSH (currently).

Thank you for this information. I was wondering if I have to go and buy a new Cell C sim card again. I just bought one last month i.e. just 8 days ago.

I will go and find out from them (Cell C). Hope you are telling the truth.
 
Wait, I'm still confused about whether it can be used on the Ipad 1

These are the technical specs from the apple site, and it seems to cover most, if not all frequencies?

Wi-Fi + 3G model: UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA (850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz); GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz)

Well if you buy the 3GB prepaid SIM, then yes the SIM is enabled for Voice and SMS/MMS use. However, there's no included minutes or SMS's as this is a data related offer.

This is one of the issues that can be addressed through the CPA. You can get your refund and probably only get charged for the time you have used the modem.

What you have quoted are the specs for the iPad 2. The iPad 1 does not cover 900 mhz where Cell C operates their high speed 3G. So yes it will work with your iPad 1, but only at edge and gprs speeds

Sounds like a tedious process.

The one shop I went to, to try and return the modem a day after I bought it told me that I should go to the shop where I bought it originally. I live in the West Rand and I bought the modem in Alberton.

When I win the Lotto, when I buy stuff I will sue anybody who rips me off.

Right now I just don't have the time, drive or money to drive all the way back to Alberton.

Rip off? I don't know. R0.13/mb (i.e. R399/3GB for 12 mths i.e R33.25 for 256mb/mth) doesn't quite compare with R0.40/mb (i.e. R100/250mb), which is the closest equivalent. Don't even go to VC or MTN. Virgin is @ R0.60/mb flat.

Its the best deal there is for your R399.

If you don't have R999 to spend once off then R399 sounds a whole lot better. I am not sure if I will use the full 2GB (even 1GB) every month either.
