Location: Kenridge, Cape Town
Time of issue: Wednesday, 15:30
Device (Huawei / ZTE): Black Cell C modem
Contract Type (pre- or post-paid): prepaid
Existing reference numbers from Helpdesk: n/a (haven't bothered phoning yet - heard it's pointless)
RAT (2G/3G/HSPA+): Not 3G
www.speedtest.net results (if possible): 0.7 mbps download, 0.20 mbps upload, ping: 268 ms
Cell ID (if possible): not sure
RSSI (if possible): not sure
Any other information relevant to the problem: problems with coverage, throughput

Was working online, then my 3G went, straight to EDGE; no throughput. Was only a few minutes, but had to disconnect because EDGE was interfering with my PC (watching TV in the background).

I was worried this was a repeat of what happened last week. Figures, yesterday was the last day I could take it back.

E1820, green light always, doesn't connect ever (anymore)

Physical address, location or Coordinates:
Brackenfell, small holding right next to Crammix Brickyard, close to Stellenbosch Agricultural boundary. Coverage map shows that the Stell Agric boundary has no coverage, but farm house completely in the red zone

Google Maps wouldn't give me co-ordinates, but this is part of the URL if it helps
ll=-33.889185,18.722025&spn=0.022194,0.044503&t=f&z=15&ecpose=-33.91153032,18.72202328,2611.77,0.003,44.977,0
Their dam is the smaller one to the left (blue!)

Date & Time of Issue: 2011/05/04 - 2011/05/11, all day

Device Manufacturer & Model (e.g. Huawei E1820, ZTE MF190): Huawei E1820 (black one)

Contract Type (pre- or post-paid): Prepaid (R2000 for 5GB month - we already had the dongle)

Existing reference numbers from Helpdesk: n/a (hey, I know one can take the sim out, but these folk are pushing 70 and I don't want them pulling out the USB lest they break the end off, so yes, currently calling helpdesk costs..)

RAT (2G/3G/HSPA+): Lately gone to green all the time, but was constant cyan light for a month (Bottom left says WSDMA when disconnected, then HSPA when connected, 98% signal)

Have tried forcing it to be WSDMA only, then it simply refues to connect..
Also tried refreshing the registration, which gives me back a cyan light for a while.

We got the dongle on a adhoc basic way back in February, and for the first 3 weeks it flew, worked a bomb! Really high speeds, except for month end. (One could click a you tube and immediately watch it.)

So that proved there was coverage. At least back then.

www.speedtest.net results (if possible): dongle is not with me.. sorry!

Cell ID (if possible): unknown
RSSI (if possible): -75dBm - -98ish

Interestingly enough, tho I suppose it is just acting like a cellphone, I can send USSD commands even when it refuses to connect, eg *147# gets me a menu.

The reason we got it was because the Telkom lines were stolen. That took two months to get them replaced. Four days later they simply cut the poles off, and took the cable. Another 3 weeks and Telkom dug a trench and buried all except 100m. Night before last that 100m was stolen  (again by cutting off the poles - when will Telkom learn?)

I did post in this thread some time back.. with a speednet jpg (not that I expect you to go find it :wtf: - I know what a schlep being a mod is!)

You asked for detail... :D

Any other information relevant to the problem: Getting almost no UL and DL speed during weekday evenings. It seems as if the network gets overloaded when everyone gets home from work. Modem has been fixed to a router since I got it in November 2010. The slow network speeds have only been a problem the last two months or so.

Randburg seems quite stable, but still slow. Ping of 300ms, 2Mb down, 0.9Mb up. Spoke to a techie today, must perform s few tests and give feedback by monday

@ginngs, if you reading this, they also emailed me MDMA, asked me to take screenshots so they can see cell ID. I offered an MDMA log (which he did know existed). Cool part is, your app is becoming popular enough to help the telecom Gians to fix their issues!!! ;)

Isn't that something! But at least Cellc conceded to this and are using it to provide a better service. Doubt MTN and VC would have .......
