Cell C Network Issues: Disconnects, Coverage, Throughput Problems - Report Here

Good Day

i have noted this, and am taking up with them, as we speck.

thanks AM and thanks for the call - be sure to tell techies it's an INTERMITTENT fault - I can get 3G to actually load web pages roughly 10% of the time...

Location: Saxonwold and Sandton
Date & Time of Issue: Since purchase on 24 May 2011
Device Manufacturer & Model (e.g. Huawei E1820, ZTE MF190): Nokia E71 tethered via USB cable
Contract Type (pre- or post-paid): Pre-paid
Existing reference numbers from Helpdesk: N/A
RAT (2G/3G/HSPA+): 3G
www.speedtest.net results (if possible): N/A
Cell ID (if possible): N/A
RSSI (if possible): N/A
Any other information relevant to the problem: I purchased a 24GB speedstick for my aunt on 17 May. It worked beautifully in my home and office on 17 and 18 May. Speeds at the office in Sandton at over 5Mbps. Speeds at home in Saxonwold, where I usually only have EDGE, at 2Mbs. I tested the SIM in my old Nokia E71 and got similar speeds at home. So I purchased just the 24GB SIM for myself on 24 May and put it into the Nokia. After a few seconds or minutes I remain connected but have zero throughput. Can't access any sites, not even www.cellc.co.za Need to reconnect to resume service. But it means I can't download anything. Tried the SIM in another phone - same story. Tried on another PC - same story. So I assume it is a network issue?

Good Day eye_scream

Please can you PM you contact details :
and data sim number :

Hi

Couple of things on my side. Firstly, kudos to cell C for being so quick to respond.
Secondly, I tried to connect by tethering my wife's Nokia C7 and it is working well. Hasn't cut out yet, and in an area where I only have Edge on the other networks, here is my speedtest:

1313722384.png

Will keep you posted if I have any issues, but so far, so good.

Ok, so further to my last post. I got no throughput soon after posting on the C7. So here is the summary: With Speedstick, no problems. Same PC, 3 different phones tethered, no throughput after a few minutes. BUT on phone browsing works perfectly. For some reason, instead of creating a DUN to tether from Windows, I used Nokia's Ovi suite. On connecting, I was told to download a hotfix which would stop some modems responding at fast speeds. Downloaded it, and this morning, after 30 minutes 78MBs, I am still getting data.

The file for anyone else who may run into the problem: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/925681/en-us

Hi Cellc;

Can I get some feedback as to the progress at this tower? What if anything has been done?

I got this SMS from Cell C on 12 May and there has been NO/ZILCH/NADA progress.

Good Day Mr. ############,
as per our teecom, your reference number is TT1375567.
These queries take up to 5 to 7 working days to be completed.
Kind Regards,
Cell C - Technical Support

Intermittent 3G, but mostly RSSI -73dBm EDGE and then speed as above.

And this after the problem has been escalated to Cell C management.... I'm steadily losing all hope that the problem at tower 2084 will be fixed soon :-(

Thank you cell c for fixing my download speed:

Upload speed could use work, but I'm happy

Full description of the problem with as much detail and history as possible: Repeated Internet disconnects, Data throughput is very low. Purchased 2Gb - 12 month data package on Thursday 26-05-2011 once it was confirmed at the store that there was coverage for my area. Connection was average on the 26th, but since then repeated disconnects (more than 20 before I quit) making the service pretty much unusable. This is my first attempt at adding my voice to what appears to be a long standing issue with many CellC customers. I pray that this is resolved soon or I would be forced to take the CPA route and return the modem for a full refund. Been lucky to be able to post this information

Hi Cell_C, I did send you a email, many apologies for that I did not notice this thread, Sorry :(
Ok Cell C is new in my area probably a week or so, not sure. My speedtest results always show the exact same result no matter how many times I do it and no matter what time. With a RSSI of 67 should it not be showing a better speed ? :)
Is the tower capping the speeds in my area (0.74 & 0.62), it certainly looks like it, should it not be set at a higher speed.
If I compare it to Vodacom which is the only other 3G service in that area, there is huge difference in speed between them.
Please have a look at the tower maybe it has not been set up properly, Thank You!

Existing reference numbers from Helpdesk: TT 1383219 - have had 1 (missed) call from 0843004380 on Saturday 28 May, but nothing further

www.speedtest.net results (if possible): See below

Any other information relevant to the problem:

Network speeds (upload and download) vary at times from acceptable to awful. I have noticed switching between the following CellIDs - 40081, 40391 and 40394. Speeds depend very much on which CellID is in use. Following tests are both from this morning (1 June).

CellID 40394: http://speedtest.net/result/1321394122.png - 5449/1647kb/s ping 100ms

CellID 40081: http://speedtest.net/result/1321437411.png - 1892/29kb/s ping 173ms

The RSSI values on 40394 vary between -85 and -97 and on 40081 between -75 and -85. However, 40394 always gives much better speeds even though the signal is much weaker according to the RSSI values.

CellID 40394 has only been used fairly recently and maybe a new tower? Would be interested to know where it is. The other towers I have seen are 40081 which I think is at the Homechoice building in Main Road Claremont and 40391 which is in Lansdowne Road at the Clareinch post office.

Any other information relevant to the problem:
There isn't an issue with the Device as it works perfectly in other areas. However, at home it is unable to pick up any Cell C 3G. It rarely connects to VODA EDGE Roaming. The call centre said that there is Cell C 3G connectivity in the area and will need to send someone out to check the tower.
