Cell C tariff reduction on new package

Why not reward existing contract holders with increased service offerings for the same current contract value?

Well done, Cell C

EDIT: Hmm, I see though it is billed per minute, and then in 30 second chunks thereafter. This would mean you lose out especially if you make many sub minute calls.

True, but at least it beats Virgins offering.Vodacom and MTN are as usual in bed together whilsts the children duke it out.

I have to ask this: the cost of a 1 minute conversation on a telephonic device is R1.50?

How is this cheap when it would be possible to talk for much longer for the same money if the networks would allow quality VOIP apps to be used on handsets?

Cellphones are the biggest rip off to hit the world ever.

this is only the beginning... the lower interconnect rate has *JUST* been announced and already the competition is hotting up...

just wait until the MTR drops further...

I distinctly remember vodacon stating that even IF the interconnect rates are forced down, it will NOT mean lower prices for the consumers....

Right...

Where are all those prophets of doom who were telling us lower interconnect fees wouldn't translate to lower retail costs. Here we go, let the war begin!

MTN and Vodacom are going to have a fairly large hole in their revenue stream come 2010. They're not going to simply accept that. They will find a way to plug the gap by screwing the consumer. There may be lower calls but they will inflate prices elsewhere.

I don't know of any networks in SA that block VoIP.

if the bill is R1.50 for the 1stmin and billed in chunks of 30sec then its actually R3.00 per min

Some opportunistic marketing by Cell C (however not saying the reduction is a bad thing) and poor reporting by the staff reporter.

- the reduction can not be attributed to any cost saving due to lower interconnect - nothing in fact stopped them from offering these rates before the MTR reduction - their timing is purely a marketing ploy to be seen as the consumer champion.

- I find it interesting that a reduction in rates which were R2.00/minute with per second billing after the first minute and now are changed to R1.50/minute with billing in 30 second chunks after the first minute is reported as a 47% tariff reduction - disappointed in the quality of the reporting.

Good point - is it R1.50 per 30 second chunk? That makes all the difference.

The rate is R1.50/minute. The rate is charged in 30 second segments after the first minute, i.e. if you speak for 1 minute and 1 second you will be charged R2.25. A call of 1 minute 31 seconds would cost R3.
