I have a iPhone 12 and it's lived in a case since I got it a couple of months ago. Yesterday morning I removed it from the case as I have been making lots of calls lately (company is limiting f2f meetings due to Covid) and now I remember what a nice device it is to actually hold on to. This is the case (pun intended) with many phones these days. So much R&D goes into making a nice device to look and hold on to, but then we stick it in a R200 case to protect it for the 2 years we are going to use it before getting a new one never really enjoying the aesthetics of the device itself.

There is a argument to be made for protecting the screen as covers can prevent screen damage/cracking with falls, but one can still enjoy the aesthetics of the device whilst putting a decent glass screen protector on that does not change the overall look and feel of the device, and with the iPhone 12 it has a pretty strong screen already as shown by the many YouTubers that went to extremes to break it.

So no I am sitting here thinking, should I just go full commando from here on forward? Risking breaking the device and paying thousands to have it repaired, or do I just give up on ever having a sexy device to hold on to and just keep a cover on it?

What do you guys do?

Have always had this issue when I take my phone out of the R80 cover to clean it. It’s such a crime that we have to go to these lengths to deny ourselves the full enjoyment. That said, my iPhone X is back in the cover but I threw away the screen protector once it “was worn”. Small steps!!! I must admit, I do drop it a lot

I went on a trip in June, took my S20+ out the cover to attach it to my drone remote. Fell on to the concrete, smashed the front.

R5k later...

Blxm. This begs the question then... Is cellphone insurance perhaps worth it then at a R200 p/m premium? Then you can go naked without any worries...

May as well slap a rugged case on the iPhone then and have a decent phone with the protection.
Heh, no was just a joke smart ass comment. I feel iPhone aesthetics are amazing, cases do rob it of its shine per se. But when it falls and breaks your immediate reaction is one of, "Why didnt I get a cover?"

I think a poll would have been better for this thread.

I have been going commando for almost 2 years now. Replacing my old Nokia won't set me back too much if I broke it. Prefer the sleekness of no cover. I usually keep a cover on for the first year or until I can't stand using one though.

Done!

Never used covers at all. Then again, my phones are all tough.

No ways, cellphone insurance is usually a rip off. I just add it to my existing insurance for a fraction of that...

Have a wallet case for iPhone 8. Carries driving licence and 3 cards. No room for money

I use the thin plastic cover and screen protector that came with the phone, my son has dropped this phone quite a few times and it has no damage, looks brand new when I take it out of it's cover every now and then to clean. El Cheapo y9 prime though.

In the case of iPhones, the different colors available are of course only referring to the back side of the phone. From the front they all look the same.

Many people then carefully make a decision on the colour, only to put it in a case hiding the backside anyway.

That is why I use a transparent cover on my iPhone to “enjoy” the colour on the back.

I received Apple Care for free with my phone when I upgraded a month ago, that covers one screen replacement (although with an excess fee). Together with the fact, as mentioned, that the iPhone 12 series has a very durable screen, and I put a screen protector on as well, I might consider going naked in the future.

I will just try to find some sort of a transparent backside protector (don’t know if something like this exists?) to protect the back against scratches.

What I hate about covers is that they let in a lot of dirt, if you don’t take the phone out of the cover and clean both at least once a month, that dust turns into sticky grime over time and it becomes difficult to clean up after a while.

You get those backside covers, but not in SA for some reason. I am also looking for them.

I have only found these on Takealot for the Pro, but I cant find them for the normal 12:

And then this website which I have never heard of:
