He does have an iPad and his concerns are valid. I also share most of his concerns, but I think it is because we haven't really bought into the whole apple eco-system as yet. But I think it is just that we don't like stuff being done for us, that we prefer being done in a different way.

More interesting is that Apple have sold more iOS devices in these few short years than they have sold computers in their entire history.

This makes me sad panda, as it means less and less love to OS X

Not all people program, only a tiny of all PC users. Who knows, a PC might become a niche market for only programmers and web designers etc. Most people that use PCs only consume, so a tablet might be all they would need.

The PC won't die, don't worry - not yet in anycase. As long as there will be things to be consumed, there will be a need for things to be made, which the tablets just can't do.

And I still prefer gaming on my PC to my PS3.

Perhaps do a follow-up article about using an iPad only... no PC / iPC anywhere in the user experience... from unboxing to using WITHOUT having a personal computer or laptop anywhere.

Just user + iPad... see what he can do with JUST that device from the get-go. just the iPad... no iTunes etc... just the iPad.

Since iOS 5 the need to have a PC has been taken out of the equation.

I'm so glad PC's don't adhere to the "lifecycle" trap you get with these damn tablets (especially when you take the price into account). So you can't really compare.

Also, anyone else noticed that ever since Dual Core processors on PC's the time you need between upgrades has become less and less?
A four year old+ Dual Core is still more than capable for most desktop software, spend R1.6K, drop in a SSD and it's almost a whole new machine.Even a decent graphics card these days can last a very long time (thanks to console "dumbing").

I expect my SB i5 2500K to last a very long time before I need to upgrade, hell, Windows 8 runs even better on it that Win7. I'd like a tablet for some more convenient content consumption, but taking the price into account just doesn't make it worth it.
R5-7K is insane if you compare it to the Notebook you can buy with that cash, sure, you obviously pay for the form factor but it's still way too expensive from my point of view.

Exactly. And it seems they conveniently forget that most people who buys these things already have PC's.... and those will need to be upgraded as well, they just have a much longer lifecycle than these 8 - 12 months tablet hype sessions.

Ja, I have my PC with a quad core in it for three years now and I don't feel the need to upgrade anytime soon. That said my previous PC lasted me 6 years so I think PCs life cycles were always long though. And I only got a new one because a power surge fried it, was still running really well. Not that quick with XP but Ubuntu ws really smooth.

I've bought tons of pc components though.

That's just what I was thinking, there is no way to monitor how many PC's that users assembled themselves using components, so the PC vs 'Other' statistics are extremely flawed.

Yes it was, but I still want the 3G limit gone. It really hinders people that don't have wifi everywhere. Does the 3G limit apply to the cloud too? I haven't used the cloud at all.

Most users just buys PCs. People on here probably all build theirs but we really aren't the majority of people that buy PCs are we.

But you also get the PCs that a PC shop build themselves as well. I don't know if there is a way of counting that.

Content creation is not what most families are in to. Content creation is not such a big deal for most households so one PC can be used for that when required. but it doesnt change the fact that you dont need a PC. If you buy an iPad, you can use it straight away, without ever having to connect it to a PC

Exactly. It doesn't really mean anything for the PC, but the PC means something for the tablet, because people will expect more and more from their tablets so there's no way but up, meaning, tablets will just have to become PC's in another form factor.

Microsoft realized that, will be interesting to see what the rest does.

Ah... it is just that my brother is always having to have his iPad2 attached to his pc... for whatever reason. Strangely enough his iPad2 will not charge while conencted via USB, not on the MacPro at work, the Air or the MacBook... but does charge on my HP laptop (grins).

Forgive my Mac OS ignorance, or pardon it please, but when was iOS 5 released ? Should he upgrade then ?

I still need iTunes/PC to transfer, Facetime or even upgrade the OS.
I need it for sure to get certain apps too.

I wouldn't recommend an iPad to anyone without a PC, iTunes, Wifi link and unlimited plan. The first 3 being a necessity
