I know a PC is an inanimate object - whereas a wife is a living, breathing person?
I didn't say crap it was - I said it's far from being stand alone
By the way, I've opened an access point in our store room ... powered it up and tried to connect. Sadly, it still won't work :/
Do you reckon I need a PC somewhere in the chain?
Perhaps to configure the AP? Or control it?
Or can a flick the switch and get on the internet?
Yes - some of these guys do configuration with tablets, but I promise you a fair amount do it with a COMPUTER

I started redoing my network - so yes.
(although I alternate with a Tenda 150G 3G router connected to a desktop)
You configure it via your iPad exactly as you would on a computer. You browse to the Admin page (usually 192.168.1.1) in Safari and then put in the settings.
You do not need a desktop computer to do that
Nope. Prior to iOS 5 you you needed iTunes. Not any longer (Although for certain use cases, I imagine you would need a computer. But not for any standard scenario anymore)
People will use whatever they have available. I could even change router settings via my PS3 if I wanted.

I still think the iPad is far from being a stand alone device.
I've needed iTunes for everything - from the starting it up, through to transfers, to application downloads (20MB back in the day), updates to apps and even OS updates. I even borrowed a R201 mifi modem purely for the iPad to bypass the wifi restrictions.
I posted on the Apple forum that I needed a file for my PC ... and even with an iPad, mifi router and built in modem - there's nothing I can do. I couldn't access the file and don't even know where it is.
But like I say, I think you're the minority setting things up with iPads and PS3s - the majority of guys have the PC linked to their wifi, but I get the point.

Some of my friends don't have PC's, but they have iPads.
And once again, you are confusing WiFi with PC's. You didn't need iTunes to download apps over 20mb. You needed WiFi to do that. Dito with app updates and OS updates.
And please explain why you would need a PC to set up a WiFi router? The process is *exactly* the same on an iPad. There is not one bit of difference (Except you click on the Safari icon instead of the the Internet Explorer icon )

The older FNB iPad2s required a PC / Mac and iTunes before they could be used... unless, again, I'm being Windows doff and missed something about the >iOS5 era.
I know that friends and family who got their iPad2s from FNB last year ALL HAD TO use their PC's and iTunes with it, else they could not use it... out of the box.
Again... perhaps there should be a pre iOS5 and post iOS5 distinction made. What used to be and what now has become.

Exactly - before iOS5 you needed access to a computer (though many in fact just used their local Apple store). iOS5 really simplified things. For one thing the OTA update for my iPad was 170mb compared to 700+ mb if I had done it via the computer.

No. The outcome you state is correct, but not the reasons.
Most people use computers to set up their WiFi, as they already have computers.
Most people use iTunes to sync their music to their iPads (over WiFi), because they already have all their music in iTunes (And have had their music there for the last 10 years since they got their first iPod)
Ditto for the photo's, movies, etc
However, it is *easier* to *not* sync with iTunes or have a computer in the mix.
iPad + Wifi is simpler than iPad + iTunes
The OTA upgrade is a Delta. The iTunes upgrade is an ipsw Restore
