Hi all,

I can't decide which car to get and hope you guys can help me!

I'm looking at the following new compact cars:

Hyundai Elantra 1.8
Chevrolet Cruze 2.0 tdi
Ford Focus 2.0
Mazda 3 2.0
Mitsubishi Lancer 2.0
Kia Cerato 2.0

Which one should I get and why? Or give me your rating for each one...

Important factors to me are: performance (acceleration and easy overtaking), fuel consumption, looks, features and maintenance costs.

Thanks guys! :D

My choice would be: (best to worst)
Hyundai, Chevrolet, Kia, Ford, Mazda, Mitsubishi.

I'm not a big fan of the bottom 3, I think they are overpriced and under spec compared to the others.
The ford is worth a look, but a family member has a Ford and I'm not impressed with them at all.
I prefer the look of the Elantra to the Cerato, but only slightly, so for me the top 3 would be a close call.
I'm currently looking at replacing my car, and those are the three that I am going to be looking at when I decide to bite the bullet.

Cool I agree with your choices, good luck in finding your new car...

My pick would be

The Mazda if good handling was my priority
The Hyundai if extras were my priority

The Ford maybe as it handles as well if not slightly better than the Mazda but I don't like Ford interiors.

Thanks all for your comments, so far i'm looking at the Elantra, after doing some research online i've found the following:

Elantra - good performance for a 1.8l engine and good fuel economy, it's also very smooth and quite... On topcars website they managed to get 0-100 in 7.8 secs .... that's very impressive! Also nice features

Mazda 3 - is the most fun to drive and got good handling but poor performance and fuel consumption, got nice features in upperclass models

Ford focus - it's quite expensive and has some complaints about road noise, but got good handling and performance...also nice features

Kia cerato - interior looks a bit cheap and lacks performance, but overall a nice car

Mitsubishi - Exterior not that nice and might struggle to sale it sometime and lacks features but got great performance

Chevrolet Cruze - Noisy but punchy diesel engine, rest of the car is quite good... just don't know about the Chev brand in SA...

Do you guys agree with those?

Very good list I definitely agree with it. The performance & fuel consumption of the Mazda & Ford isn't really "bad" its just average and the performance & fuel consumption of the Hyundai & Kia is above average.

Why not wait for next year and get a Sky-activ Mazda or a Turbo Ford which will be better than the Hyundai & Kia in terms of performance & fuel consumption and still have that fun handling. Hoping we get the sky-active Mazda's & 1L turbo Fords. We got the CX-5 alas not the diesel one so one can only be hopeful.

Test them all. I'd recommend the Honda Civic though. Maybe the Type R of you have some extra cash.
