Compact car showdown - which one to get

I agree, if only there was a 2.0 tdi Elantra :D
Speaking of which, why did you choose a diesel Cruze if all the other cars in your selection use petrol? If you can stretch that far, Jetta 2.0 TDI. Perfect mix of performance and good consumption. Or the 118 kW Highline version if you prefer a petrol engine.

Of all those 6 cars which i like was the Cruze the only one I could find with a turbo diesel in the price range i'm looking at for a demo/second hand car nothing more than 30,000km (looking at Autotrader etc.) I'm willing to pay up to 200k.

From that list I'd get the Elantra, from a value for money perspective you're going to struggle to find anything better.

That and it's a car of the year winner...

The new ballade is prolly also a good contender in that bracket.

what do you think of the sonic ?

I hired one the other day and quite enjoyed it.

It's an excellent car. The first ones had some teething problems mainly on the 1.3D but that is sorted now. Being Korean gives some reassurance as to their build quality, add to that the sterling track record of its predecessor, the Aveo, and you know you are getting a solid car. The looks are quite bold and trumps everything else in the B-segment, the interior is pretty modern too.

No experience with them but they look kinda cool. Would definitely look into the diesel models though. That 1.3 is most likely to be VERY light on the juice.

Thanks everyone for all your comments so far!

I've counted the votes and it's:

Hyundai Elantra 1.8 - 6
Ford Focus 2.0 - 4
Chevrolet Cruze 2.0 tdi - 1
Mazda 3 2.0 - 1
Mitsubishi Lancer 2.0 - 1
Kia Cerato 2.0 - 0

I love those comments from people who already have driven or drives one of them - it helps a lot by choosing the car for me :D

Hey. Where's the Honda Civic? There's at least 3 votes for that. Probably the best of the lot when you take everything into account.

+1 on Focus

I have one, its also quick although it only has 107kw it feels like a lot more when over taking.

It also has USB, aux, 6 speakers, cruise control, global window opening, ability to change weighting of the steering( comfort, normal and sport) and a handy manual mode on the auto box.

You should at least compare top spec to top spec (with satnav etc)

Now would you rather drive this:

Or pay an extra a couple of ten grands more and drive this:

Just saying, that Elantra is a far prettier car and the damn "reliable" Honda Civic is such an overrated car.

Please the love of Honda someone post a pic of the type R.

I've test driven the focus and felt cheap and like they cut corners everywhere. They don't even give you a full size spare wheel.

I've test driven the Elantra and everything felt like plastic, no road feel either. Felt like I was driving a plane.

Different strokes for different folks I guess.

Stay away from any GM product. point period. Service is fair but they dont change and fix what they bill you for. GM in pta and germiston.
My kia, serviced at edenvale has always be 100% top notch. I prefer the kia's over all. The elantra steering is to light on the open road.
But also will look at ford, I've had a few of them and spares etc is good.
