Constant disconnects

I am currently based in Umhlanga, and had constant disconnects, which has now been resolved.

I am unsure whether it was due to my installing Windows XP SP3 or due to Cell-C network.

I would suggest that other Win XP users with the similar problem try SP3 if they do not already have it. It includes all updates related to wireless data transfers.

Hi Ronald

Thanks for getting involved. I've spoken to 3 Cell C technicians and the last techie told me to return the cell c modem and SIM for a SIM swop at one of your stores?

Should I do this or rather wait for a network fix? The first month everything was fine, only started disconnecting from 5th of January.

Thanks again.

I think I may have stumbled across a fix for this disconnect issue

I am using Apple Mac OSX. I went into my PPP settings for this E1820 Cell C modem, on OSX.

1. Open Network Preferences
2. Highlight the Huawei E1820 MODEM
3. Go to Advanced settings
4. Click on PPP
5. Third item down the list says "disconnect if idle for 10 minutes"
6. Change this "10 minutes" to a higher value, or even uncheck the box, so it will not disconnect regardless how long it is idle
7. Save the settings

I don't know where you fella's that are using Windows, would find your PPP settings...

My disconnect problems only happened if I had let my computer stand idle - so this would surely have been my problem

Nope it's a network issue not an idle computer issue and CellC have admitted to as much. Things have stabilised significantly today though, during this week I've been lucky if I could maintain a connection for more than a minute, so far this afternoon I've been connected for about 90 minutes now and haven't had a total disconnect as I was experiencing earlier in the week, although sometimes I'm still having to refresh a browser page once or twice so the connection is still a bit erratic.

Yup, well maybe there is an additional network issue, but for me - the disconnects always happened with the message "you have been disconnected from the PPP server". Now since changing my PPP setting, to never disconnect from the server when idle, I have not had anymore disconnects since then.

Lucky you. Still having disconnect issues.

I was in Sunningdale and Pinetown today in KZN and everything seems to have stabilized.

My solution to my numerous disconnects. Since doing the following, I have not had one disconnect. Copied and pasted from one of my submissions on a similar thread....

I'm in Port Elizabeth, the trial area.... The first few months were great, now constant disconnections. Even moved from Win Vista to Win 7 - same problem.

Was fine all evening and through the night but from about 11 am disconnects regularly. A friend in town says his connection does the same.

I am sick to death of this bs company! FIX THE F@#%@¿& PROBLEM!

If you are suffering from disconnects, open command prompt (run cmd.exe) and type "ping -n 99999 www.google.com" and Enter. That keeps my connection alive.

Come on Cell C... This problem should be sorted out already. It is BAD. I must have had to reconnect 20 times yesterday. I've tried using a Mac and a PC -same problem!

I cannot use my cap at all - CellC probably decided to switch off the base station in my area as I am unable to pick up 3G with force mode on. - Guess its back to the tv room(walking around aka war driving) have like 3gig to go
