If he is in Cape Town like me, some of the Vumatel IP ranges are set up with DNS servers in JHB. So every time there is an issue with the backhaul between CPT and JHB, DNS is down at the same time. Highly annoying I will admit, as it seems the whole internet is down, while its only that backhaul link affecting DNS. Using Google DNS doesnt help either, because it goes over the same backhaul as to CISP JHB DNS.

If there were DNS servers in Cape Town on the CISP network, the issues for DNS would be much less of a problem when there are backhaul interruptions.

I was reporting this high ping to sites in Gauteng, and referred to comments here on the forum as well. I even attached a smokeping to a local site in Cape Town showing < 2ms pings. I thought it was odd to ask me to test from my CPE as it was obvious to me that it is not isolated to my line.

All honky dory again, I put my complaints buzzer back in the cupboard.

edit: Hope this is permanent but Im seeing best speed ever reported to my USA and UK based test servers. Peaking at max line speed pssst... everyone stay disconnected for me.

Looks like Quad9 does some threat blocking too (might be good for some...), and is more strict with query volume.

DNS server was not responding. And as I said I contacted Vumatel and they said nothing their side.

Ok, there are DNS servers on CT so that's arb. I will have a look for you.

Except, on CISP it routes to JINX

So same problem, if CPT->JHB backhaul is having issues, DNS will be affected

Could you post the CPT DNS servers here? Would like to at least manually set my router to use them.

I know as the ISP, when you set up the subnets for a vlan with Vumatel ground, that you also need to set the DNS servers at that time. If you want to change it after the fact, its a ticket to Vumatel, at least it used to be.

Ping statistics for 8.8.8.8:
Packets: Sent = 50, Received = 50, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 5ms, Maximum = 30ms, Average = 6ms

I am on a 5mbps Neotel fibre in JHB.

Your servers are right but the routing isn't working as it should, they are anycast IPs so you should be able to get to any of them "locally"
