Cool Ideas Fixed 5G/4G Feedback Thread

@Chris_Auc: I hope you can get this issue resolved very soon !

Can you communicate with the SIM card from the USSD menu of the G5TS, can it receive SMSs, make calls etc. ? Can you read the phone number from the Device Information menu of the G5TS ?

I would try to communicate with the SIM in the hope that something starts working !
Long story short, it seems MTN sent a batch of SIM cards to Cool Ideas that are giving issues (including the SIM I received). Cool Ideas managed to find a SIM from an old batch that still works fine, and they are couriering it to me.

Will report back once I receive the new SIM. :)

@Chris_Auc: Great to hear that Cool Ideas has arranged a new SIM for you. We are all very interested to see how the MTN package performs !

MTN can be a problem if you are in an area with utilization as they implement their own network capacity safety net which is basically levels of throttling above that of the ISP.

So what you mean is if Chris_Auc gets great performance we shouldn't all rush to jump ship?

Yeah fixed wireless access is very dependant on the location and other factors. Its why we operate on multiple providers. No silver bullet.

You can read about it here.

So basically, if you do a large download 2 days before the end of the month and your ISP's throttling resets on the 1st, MTN's throttling might still be active until you fall below the safety net limits.

It's dynamic and dependent on area, and network congestion etc. For example, around the 25th of December to the 5th of Jan a lot of people got hit with this safety net which MTN implemented to keep speeds fast over the festive period for mobile subscribers.

I had the issue where there is no connection in the morning again. Internet worked fine around midnight but when I woke up at 7am there was no internet. This time it was worse as one router reset didn't force a connection. Restarted the router 3 times before finally picking up a connection.

Is this a widespread issue? Seems like I might not be the only one experiencing this from previous posts. I'm on Vodacom. The problem doesn't happen every day. Maybe every 2-3 days and only for the last 2 weeks or so. I haven't reported it because one router reset always solved the issue in the past.

Speeds are better than ever (once connected):

Those speeds are insane!
I have no issues on Vodacom. Have now been connected for 98 hours - Stellenbosch, ZTE MC801A router.

Maybe try a prepaid sim overnight to check if this is a CI issue or a Vodacom/tower related issue?

I'm in Centurion and experiencing exactly the same issue. The wifi suddenly decides to drop connection - connected without internet. Have to restart and sometimes login to router and mess around with the band settings. Very irritating. I'm giving it one more month, if this issue persists, I'll move to another ISP becoz my neighbour has no such issues and he's on a 5G contract with Vodacom directly.

Hi there. Have you reported this to our support team as yet? As they can try a few things with you to diagnose further

Hi there, apologies if you have not had the best experience, have you also reported this to our support team as yet? Are you able to provide the ref?

I've got multiple references but I'm just tired of logging faults for the same issue.

Thank you so much. Unfortunately these were all from about 2 months ago, where you have confirmed connection/ All is in order via all of them.
One of them was related to maintenance Vodacom was doing, the other you could not get a 5G Connection, which was logged and resolved as well, and the latest ticket was a Unstable Connection issue , that you later confirmed was sorted 3 days after the ticket was opened.

Unfortunately I don't see any mention of this No Internet issue persiting, hence it was not looked into further.
I will ask our team to be in touch to diagnose further

Right now there is a connection but it will disconnect at random. My previous calls over the phone with the support tech were resolved in terms of troubleshooting settings and establishing an immediate connection, unfortunately no one outside can monitor the dropped connections when they happen or establish why it's happening.

Indeed, however when the connection does drop, we can gather info, such as the light indicator on the router, what the router dashboard says (any cell info) Run traces while the connection is not working, firmware upgrades, Resets, etc, to help narrow the issue down. It could very well just be a faulty batch of routers or Sims that were sent out, as this is not a widely reported issue, so our team can also resort to sim swap/router swap as last resorts to see if that makes any difference.

We are here to help :)

This morning when it happened and I couldn't connect, I logged into the router and saw that there was a bit of upload but 0Kb/s download. Router light was normal (white).
This helps thanks, would you mind doing a trace to something like 1.1.1.1 when It happens again,to see where its failing. Then sharing that on the ticket as well? Along with some snapshots of your 4G/5G cell info, and RSRP, RSRQ, SINR, etc
