Cool Ideas VPN Server(s)

Apparently there is a new vpn in the works but not sure of the timeline and when it will be available @PBCool ?
Pretty soon, seems most of the work is done. They are waiting on some network advertisement, which I should be able to look at tomorrow/Thursday.

There isn't perhaps a chance that you could host a similar VPN for connections to the US, even if its just one on the US east coast perhaps? I love playing the Quake Remaster online and if I can't find a solid EU host, I end up playing on the US servers. Using the UK VPN, it really does make a huge difference and my latency has dropped about 10-13ms on avg and killing enemies has become easier. Not expecting an exact replica for US based connections, but it would be nice if the option was available, if it isn't too costly if I may add :)

The benefit you getting is probably from the provider in the UK having a more direct route so Zayo i see is used a lot on the VPN vs Cogent normally.

The US is massive and often there are multiple routes to a place and some are longer than others as they go through different states so UK host might have a faster route to the server vs the normal Cogent. A VPN in say New York would still mean using Cogent to the UK and to New York you would probably lose that benefit - you would only benefit from a better provider from the VPN location.

In Apex West Virginia comes up as the second lowest US ping with Cogent for me but on the one VPN host i use its sometimes faster

You can try sign up for Windscribe its free and if you verify your account you get 15GB i think and their network is solid i have been playing Apex on it, try it out they got a few free US servers

@PBCool @TheRoDent My wife and I also have this issue. We both play Final Fantasy 14 and chat over discord, but sometimes we need to use the VPN when the servers are very populated else we get serious packet loss and rubberbanding, even when the ping stable (I don't believe it is a network issue on our side, but routing on theirs).

But when either of us do so, myself on Linux and my wife on Windows 10, Discord constantly disconnects for a few seconds and then reconnects. While we can basically talk across the rooms to get around it, I do 8 player content where we need voice comms, so I've had to resort to running a VM bridged to router just to have a stable Discord connection, which is obviously less than ideal.

Please have a look into this.

Thanks,
Saieden
As indicated, the VPN is without support, but we will do our best. Starting it up has given us tremendous feedback, which is great.

Working on it....

PPTP though... I'm sure there is a technical reason for using it, but WireGuard would be sick if feasible.

VPN updated see page 1 :)

Anyone manage to get PBR working for PPTP on Merlin? Would be ideal to specify remote ports for traffic that must get routed through the tunnel.

Quite a noticeable performance improvement in WoW and about 40ms delta in latency but most of all the "feels" is much more responsive.

@TheRoDent Is the old VPN server going to stick around or get phased out?

Just wondering if I should be using the new, or old VPN server, I'm not affected by the NAT issues on the old one.

Both will be around for the foreseeable future, and are in the same network/DC, so will provide the same functionality.

With a view to expand our VPN locations, I'm asking for some suggestions/pointers.

  • If you are using a VPS or self-hosted VPN, which locations are you interested in ?
  • If using someone else, like exitlag etc, which location are you using on their services, and for which games?
  • Can you provide a traceroute from our network?
  • Can you mention the name of the VPN provider ?
  • Which games are good to route through here, and why ?

I'd say Singapore would be massive if it could be done, its the main reason i was using exitlag, the route to SAFE was amazing since it opened up the whole of Asia, Australia etc.

Exitlag server was CT if i recall of JHB, Apex has 2 independent hosts then Google servers in Singapore then most AWS/Google in the east side servers

Hello,

Gauteng user.

I use exit lag for Apex legends for Singapore.

And it is great for Overwatch/Wow on the Paris Server. Since its faster than going via London.

Any idea what the exitlag Singapore used as a VPN endpoint ?

I'm trying exitlag and just using Chrome as a "game" but don't see a "Singapore" destination?

Suggestion as to a game I can test in exitlag that would be Singapore/SAFE routed ?
